Description
ASHBEL s. WINEGAR', 0F SAN FRANCISCO',v GALIFORNA.
Leners Patent No. 79,425, dem June so, 186s.
IMPROVEMIINTIN MACHINE IOR .KIIiN-DRYING.
l-lgs Simula' rifare-h tu it this: Estima ndert mit making pitt. nf tigt time.
TO ALL WHO IT MAY CONCERNE t Beit known that I, ASYHBEL B. WIVNEGAR, of the city and county of San Francisco, State ofI California, have invented a Machine for AKiln-Drying; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying' drawings are suicient to enable any person skilled in the art-or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improvement without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide an improved kiln for drying salt and other substances that require to be kiln-dried before being reduced or prepared for market. I A
.My invention consists-inthe construction of a furnace, of masonry or iron, circular in form, or any, other shape, whose outline and dimensions shall answer the purpose. I i
Over the furnace is placed a drying-bed, or disk of ronor'other material, the whole being surrounded by a rim with the necessary discharge-opening. A suitable ,vertical driving-shaft, having its step in the centre of the disk, is suspended by framework above the furnace, by means of which a series'of radiall arms, rhaving hoes or stirrers, isrotated. l I
A feeding-hopper is also placed above the disk, andtattached to lthe frame..
To more fully illustrate and describe my invention,- reference is had to the accompanying drawings and letters marked thereon, of which- I Figure 1 is a side elevation. Figur'e2 is a plan.
A'is the furnace, of suitable material to resist fire. Upon the top, I place a pan, 13, to contain the article to be dried. The furnace is constructed with partition-walls, for the more even distribution of'heat to the bot.- tom of the disk or pan, shown in red@ A. door is placed at C, where the fuel is introduced, falling upon the gratebars.A I
From the centre of this pan rises 'an'npright shaft, F, having a step nt F. This shaft is moved by machinery, and carries radial' arms G1GG G. l These arms have spindles H I-I H' H passing through them, to thelou'er ends ofwhich are attached hoes or stirrers I I I I. These spindles are madeso as to form levers 'at the top, and have attached t'o them, by means of a crank, a movable bar,'J, by which the stirrers-are inclined inward -or outward, as it becomes necessary to retain the material in the pan a longer or shorter period, or to' discharge it when dry, which is-done through the opening K in the rim of the pan, which is provided with a sliding door, K.- i t A hopper, L, isplaced above the pan, which discharges the salt into the pan, near its centre. Thishopper is provided with a shaking-bottom or slide, O, connected by a short cord vto a spring, P, placed at one .side of the hopper. An extension-bar, R, is attached to the opposite end of the slide, to which a cord, S, is connected, which passes over grooved pulleys or rollers S and S", attached to the frame. Below the pulley S" is placed o' curved lever, T, which is attached to a crossbar of the frame.
In applying the .motive-power to the machine, by means of the pulley U, the teeth' of the bevelled pinion U' strikes the end ofthe lever. T, which 'causes the slide in the bottom of the hopper-to .vibrate to andfro, thereby insurjng a more vperfect an'd constant feeding to the pan, and wheri this auxiliary is not vrequired in feeding, the cordv is p'ulled taut, and confined to apin, V, in a standard-of the' freine, and thelever is not actuated at all.` Y Y i v i i In operating tho machine,.the sa which discharges near its centre, an over the surface of thepan. vWhen thisis a lt or other article to' be-idried is admitted to the 'pan through the hopper,
d the' hoes'are turned so as to spread the salt'or other substanceevenly ccoinplished, the hoes may be turned parallel to the radial arms, 'and kept in that positionl until-'the salt near the-peripheryris dry, when the hoes may beturned as desired,
l i and the sliding door in the Ar-imgof the pan is raisedan d the discharging commenced, luto an elevator 'or other means, to be transported to the millfor grinding. Thus a continuous charging and discharging isV had. The
furnace may be so constructed that steam may be used for drying.
Having thus described my nvention,.what I' claim, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1.- A machine for drying salt. and other substances, vcomposed of lthe furnace A, pan or disk B, the radial arms G G, spindles H H, with the hoes or stirrers I I I attached to them, with the movable oar J, for turning them in diiierent directions, so as to continually stir and turn the salt in the pan or discharge it at will from the periphery, the whole constructed and arrangedto operate substantially as herein described.
2. The sliding board or plate 0,'at the bottom of the hopper, operated by the spring P, cords S, lover T, and bevelled pinion U, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal.
