Description

PATENTED JULY 4, 1905.
H. W. ROSENBAUM.
HAIR RETAINING 00MB.
APPLIOATION FILED JAN. 25. 1905.
l.l 'rains lith Patented July llt, 1905i..
lnrnnr rricie.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 794,04*?, dated July t, 1905.
Application tiled January 25, 1905. Serial No. 242,650.
fleit known that l, Hines YV. ltosnNAUM, a citizen ot the United. States, residing in New livorli, borough oli lvlanlrattan, in the State et New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llainlte* taining Combs, of which the following a speci licati on.
This invention relates to hair retaining combs, and has among its objects the provision of a comb of this type embodying means -for securely retaining the same in the hair in order to prevent the displacement or loss thereof.
it il'nrther object oit the invention is to provide a comb provided with an improved device ttor interlocking the comb and the retaining .member in connection therewith, said. device serving to securely position the parts, but being readily unlocked in order to release the comb from the hair.
With. these and other objects and advantages in View the invention. consists in a comb embodying the novel features which will be fully described hereinafter and :linally pointed ont in the claims.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure il is a rear elevation ot a hai r-retaining comb embodying the invention. Fig. 2 :is a vertical transverse section o'f the same on line 2 2, Fig. l. Fig. 8 shows a modilied construction of the improved hair-retaining comb. Fig. al. is a vertical transverse section on line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 shows an ordinary hairconib provided. with my improved retaining device; and Fig. 6 is a vertical transverse section on line (i, Fig. a.
tiiinil ar letters ot re'l'erence indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, c designates a hair-retaining comb of the nsnal concaveconvex t'orm and provided with the nsnal teeth, which are inserted at the back or side ot the head in order to hold the hair-dress in position. Connecting the ends oit the back' 7) oi" the comb is a transverse resilient retaining member CZ, which extends across the convex smriiace ot the comb and made wider at its middle portion and thinner at its end portions, being preferably twisted near its connection with the back oit the comb, as shown at in Figs. l and. 5, so that it exerts a spring action on the hair and teeth after the comb has been placed in position. :in the hair and holds thereby the comb in a reliable manner in position at the point at which it has been applied without any change or shifting of position in the hair. The transverse retaining member may be made integral with the back of the comb and bent over, as shown in. Figs. l and 2, or it may be made of a separate piece extending over the back and cemented or otherwise attached thereto, as shown in Fig. 3. The back l; provided with. a locking device c at its intermediate portion, as shown :in Fig. Il., which is constituted by a resilient pin extending from the baclr and adapted to be snapped into position over the intermediate portion ot the retaining member d after the comb placed in position in the hair, so that the retaining member exerts a pressure on the hair and. holds it iirinly in the teeth oit the comb. The locking device c may also be applied to the retaining member itselii, extending downwardly and into a recessed portion of the back, as shown in Fig. 3. On relieving the locking device from its connection either with the retafining-piece or back ot the comb the pressure on the hair is released, so that the comb can be readily removed from. or replaced into the hair. The retaining member may also be applied to ordinary hair-combs either by being made in one piece with the same and bent over so as to :l'ornitwisted ends with the combs, or the ends may be attached by rivets or otherwise to the head. of the comb, its middle portion being retained. by the locking device c atter the comb in. place.
lilaving thus described my invention, l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters l.atent- 1. A hair-retaining comb having a. retain ing member connected. at both ends to the back thereo't and extending across the teeth,
and means for locking said member in position against the latter.
2. A hair-retaining comb comprising a comb portion. proper, a resilient retaining member connected With the ends of the comb portion and extending across the teeth of the same, and a device for locking said retaining member to the back of the comb.
3. A hair-retaining comb consisting ot a colnb portion proper, a retaining member made integral therewith and connected by twisted portions With the back ot the comb, said retaining member extending transversely across the comb portion, and a locking device between the back of the comb and said retainingmember.
4. A hair-retaining comb having a retaining member extending across the teeth thereot'7 and means acting upon the intermediate portion of said member for locking the same against said teeth.
A hair-retaining comb having a retaining member extending across the teeth thereof, and a resilient device 'for locking said member against said teeth.
(5. A hair-retaining comb having a retaining member extending across the teeth thereof, and a pin extending troni the back of the comb and operable to lock said member againstsaid teeth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my naine in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
HIMES WT. ROSENBAUM.
Vivitnesses PAUL Gonrnt, HENRY J. SUI-linnen.
