IMPROVED BRICK-MACHINE.

-TO ALL WHOM` IT MAY CONGERN:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM 0. LnsLI, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Machines; and- I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and to thc, letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in the art to construct and use my invention, I will proceed to describeit.-
My invention relates to brick-machines of that class in which a horizontally-rotating wheel, having a series of moulds in it,is used; and the invention consists of certain `novel devices for feeding the prepared clay from the hopper to the moulds, and in a novel arrangement of devices for pressing the clay into the moulds, as will be hereinafter explained.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the machine, with a portion ot' the hopper broken away, to show the internal arrangement. f

In constructing my improved machine, I prepare a suitable frame, as represented in fig. 1 and mount therein a rotating mould-wheel, G, of the usual-construction, the moulds being provided'with followers, 1*, as shown in fig. 2, which are raised by an Yinclined circular track, H, es usual in this class of machines.; At one side of the machine, upon a. vertical frame, I mount a hopper, A, having placed transversely therein a-couplc of smooth iron rollers, B, for crushing the clay, there being-located directly under these another roller, C, proA vided with projecting arms or pins, for mixing and working the clay. These parts beingJshowu in iig. 1.
The lower portion of the hopper is inclined as shown infig. 1, its sidesbeing made converging, and in the bottom isplaced a spiral screw, E, for lforcingl the clay through a short horizontal spout or mouth-piece, F, into a rectangular, box, I, so located that the moulds u are brought successivelyundcr it as the mould-wheel rotates, and as shown more clearly in fig. 2, there being a gate or slide, b, located at the side ,of the box I, as showin in fig. 1, to regulate the passage 0I' the clay into the box I from the hopper;
In the box I is placed a-plunger, R, arranged to move vertically in suitable guides, as shown more clearly in g. 2. To operate this plunger, I provide Aa cam-wheel, K, which is secured upon a shaft, J, this cam engaging with the plunger R, and imparting to it an intermittent reciprocating movement.
Upon the mould-wheel G is placed a plate, P, which extends from the rear side of thc hopper, at its lower portion, past the box I, for some distance out over the moulds, in thewhecl, as shown ing. 1. The clay, as it is Vforced. out of the hopper by the screw E, passes along on top of this plate P, through the spout F, into the box I, where there is a hole made through the plate' P, through which thc clay enters the mould u, being forced therein by the plunger R, as shown in lig. 2. A short distance beyond this point anotheropening is made in' the plate P, directly in the line of passage of the moulds; and to the plate vat this point is secured a'scr'aper, a, set inclined, with its lower edge coming in close contact with the upper surface of the mould-wheel, so as. to
slice or pare 0E any surplus of clay that there may be projecting above the surface of the wheel, as shown in' iig. 1. lhe plate I? extends beyond the scraper a for some little distance, so that as the'followcr r begins to rise,by coming at this point in contact with the incline on the track H, the clay in the mould is pressednpward against the under face of plate P, by which the brick in the mould is further compressed, and at the Sametime smoothed on its upper face, by rubbing against the `smooth surface of the plato. i
A pulley, L, is placed on the axis of' one of-thc grinding-rolls, B, both of which vare provided withn gearwheels, d, at their opposite ends, which engage with euch othcr, and one of which also gears into a similar wheel,
f, on the mixing-roller C. On the opposite end of this roller C is a bevellgear, n, which engages with a corresponding gear, o, on the shaft ofthe feeding-screw, E, by which motion is inturn imparted to it also. On the end of the shaft of one of the grinding-rolls, B, outside of the spur-gear d, is secured' a bevel-gear, t, which engages with a corresponding wheel, Z, on the cam-shaft J, which also has on its lower portion a pinion, p, which i engages with teeth on the periphery ofthe mould-wheel G. By this arrangement ot gearingit will be seen that when the pulley L is rotated, motion will be imparted simultaneously to all othei` portions of the machine.A If it be desired t o operate the machine by horse-power, a sweep may be secured to the top of shaft- J, as represented by T in iig. 1, in which case the shaft J becomes the driving-shaft.
' The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and need not be, therefore, further described. It will of course be understood that the motion of the plunger is to be so regulated as 'to descend at the instant the mould comes under the box I, so as to force the 'clay from the box I into the empty mould underneath.
By this arrangement ofdevices I am enabled to produce a machine that operates with rapidity, and that will produce a very superior quality of bricks.
Having thusdescribed my invention, what I claim, is-
1. The combination of the hopper having the inclined bottom, with the screwE located therein, with the spout F and box'I, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as shown and described.
2. In combination with the box I, I claim the plunger It and shaft J, having the cam K and wheel P mounted thereon, for rotating the mould-wheel continuously', and operating the plunger intermittently, substantially as herein described.
