UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON WRIGHT, OF FORT VALLEY, GEORGIA.
BRICK-MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 256,092, dated April 4, 1882.
Application filed January 6, 1 882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ll/IILTON WRIGHT, of Fort Valley, Houston county, Georgia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Brick-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement. Fig.2 is a sectional side elevation of the same, taken through the liner .r, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a sectional end elevation of the same, taken through the line 3 y, Fig. 2.
The object of this invention is to facilitate the operation of making bricks.
The invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
A represents the base-frame of the machine, to the top of the middle part of which is attached a hopper, B. Within the hopper B is placed a vertical shaft, 0, the lower end of which revolvesin hearings in the center of the bottom of the said hopper. The upper part of the shaft Orevolves in bearings in a cross-bar, D, attached to the top of the hopper B.
The shaft 0 can be revolved by horse-power applied to its end by a sweep, E, or by steam-' power, water-power, or other convenient power applied to its upper end by shaft and gearwheels, or by belt and pulleys, as may be convenient.
To the shaft 0 are attached a number of radial arms, F, to work and mix the clayv and keep it thoroughly stirred. To thelower part ofthe shaftO are attached four (more or less) radial arms or paddles, G, which are set ata lateral inclination, and with their lower edges close to the bottom of the hopper B, so that the said paddles will press the clay through the opening H in a side part of the said hopper-bottom and into the molds I, placed below the said opening. The molds I are placed upon the end parts ofa sliding platform, J. The upper surface of the middle part of the platform J is flush with the tops Ofillf) molds I, so as to close the opening H in the bottom of the hopper B when the filled molds are withdrawn from beneath the said opening.
- The platform J rests upon three or more rollers, K, journaled to the base-frame A. The rollers K have annular grooves around their middle parts to receive therack-barL, attached to the lower side of the platform J, so that the said grooved rollers and the said rack-bar will serve as guides to cause the platform J to travel in a straight line. The teeth of the rack-bar L mesh into theteeth of the gearwheel M, attached to the shaft N, which works in bearings in the base-frame A. To the end of the shaft N is attached the crank O, by
means of which the shaft Nand gear-wheel M are rotated to move the platform J. The gearwheel M is made of such a size that one revolutionof the crank 0 will move the platform J a sufficieut distance to remove one set of molds from beneath the opening H and bring the other set beneath the said opening, so that one set of filled molds can be removed by the off-bearers and replaced byempty molds while the other set is being filled. I
\Vith this construction the clay will be pressed into the molds by the paddles G, so that every mold will be perfectly filled.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent- In a brick-machine, the combination, with the hopper B, having the discharge-opening H in its bott0m,and provided with radial stirrers F and inclined paddles G, of the moldcarrying platform J, having the upper surface of its middle part flush with the top of the molds, and provided with the rack-bar L, secured to its under side, the gear-wheel M and the rollers K, journaled to the base under the rack-bar and provided with an annular groove around their middle parts to receive the said rack-bar and guide theplatform, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
MILTON WRIGHT.
