WATER-ICE OR SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 793,453, dated June 27, 1905.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, SAMUEL Lus'rre, a citizen of the United States, residing in Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Ice or Ice-Cream Cartridges;

and I do hereby declare the following to be a' full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to pack or put up ice-cream, water-ice, or other plastic edible substances in such a manner as to make a neat, attractive, and convenient package the holder or container portion of which is cheap enough to be thrown away when emptied and is of such nature that the contents may be eaten therefrom directly and tidily and Without the use of a spoon.

In carrying out the invention I make use of a holder or container in the form of a compressible tube of tapering form at its closed end and formed at its other end with an opening which approximates in diameter the diameter of the corresponding end of the tube, so that upon holding the tube in the hand and compressing the same its contents may be forced therefrom until the tube is empty.

The invention consists in the improved article of manufacture comprising a compressible elongated holder open at one end and closed at its other end and a charge or filling of some plastic edible substance.

The invention further consists in a compressible elongated holder suitable for the purpose set forth and in which the closed end is of thinner material than the remaining portion of the holder.

In the accompanying drawings,in which like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures, Figure 1 shows. the article as held in the hand and as already partly compressed, so that its charge or filling protrudes therefrom; and Fig. 2 is a detailview, partly in section, of the holder or container proper.

The holder or container, as above stated, is in the form of an elongated tube a, made of compressible material and provided at one end with an opening approximating in size the size of saidend of the tube. The other end of the tube is of tapering form, as at b, and closed, and the walls of said tapering portion are thinner than the walls of the tube proper, except at the extremity thereof, where the thickness is substantially the same as that of the walls of the tube proper-in other words, is slightly thicker than the wall of the tapering portion, as clearly shown at c in Fig. 2.

The tube is preferably made of relatively heavy tin-foil; but other compressible materials-such as soft gelatin,cellulose,&c.may be used, and even thin sheet-lead could be employed; but in the latter case the internal sur face thereof should be protected by some coating which would prevent poisonous chemical action between the contents and the lead.

The holder is especially designed to be packed or filled with water-ice or ice-cream, which is packed into the holder in a liquid form and is afterward refrigerated or frozen until sufficiently hard. The Warmth of th e hand softens up the portion of the contents nearest the walls of the holder, facilitating the pressing out of the contents upon compressing the holder, as will be manifest. It may be Well to remark that as the contents in said holder is practically stiff or hard the discharging of said contents would be rendered more difficult if the closed end had the same thickness as the thickness of the Wall of the tube, as the spherical shape increases the strength and stiffness of said closed end. However, by having said closed end made thinner than the rest of the tube said end is rendered more compressible and greatly facilitates the discharging of the contents when being compressed. On the other hand, by thickening the extreme end of the holder the starting of the compressing action is greatly facilitated, as will be manifest.

Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. As an article of manufacture, an elongated, compressible holder or tube open at one end and having its other end closed, the thickness of the Wall of said holder adjacent the extremity at the closed end thereof being less than the thickness of the Wall of the remaining portion of the tube or holder, substantially as described.

2. As an article of manufacture, an elongated, compressible holder or tube open at one end and having its other end closed and of substantially tapering form, the thickness of the Wall of the tapering portion of said one end and having its other end closed and 1 of substantially tapering form, the thickness of the Wall of the tapering portion of said holder being less than that of the Wall of the body portion of the holder and that of the Wall at the extremity of the closed end of said holder, substantially as described.
