HOLDER FOR MEDICINES OR OTHER SUBSTANCES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 26, 1905.
Application filed November 7, 1904. Serial No. 231,726.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, VERNON DRISKELL and CAREY DRISKELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Ghent, in the county of Carroll and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Holders for Medicines or other Substances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved paper wrapper adapted to be used as a receptacle for medicinal and other powders or substances designed to be put up in packages for sale or dispensation; and its primary object is to provide a wrapper which may be rolled into the form of a tubular or cylindrical holder provided with portions which are adapted to be twisted to close the ends of the holder and confine the powder or other substance therein.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a wrapper of this character which embodies inner and outer wrappers, the former being adapted to inclose the material and having extended twistable portions to confine said material when the wrapper is rolled into form, the outer wrapper forming a protective covering having means for retaining the wrapper in rolled form and adapted to serve as the vehicle for printed directions, &c.
Still another object of the invention is to provide a rolled holder the inner wrapper of which may form a waterproof receptacle, whereby substances liable to be affected by moisture may be kept in unimpaired condition for an indefinite period.
With these and other objects in view the invention'consists of the features of construc tion, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a holder or receptacle made in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the wrapper from which the same is formed, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the wrapper.
In carrying our invention into practice we provide a wrapper adapted to be folded into tubular or cylindrical form to provide a holder or receptacle for the medicine or sub stance to be packed for sale or dispensation and having extended portions which are adapted to be coiled or twisted to provide closures for the ends of said receptacle, the said closures being composed of a material of such a nature that either one of them may be readily torn away or disrupted to permit of the discharge of the materialfrom the receptacle. The holder or receptacle embodying these characteristics is made from the form of wrapper shown in Figs. 2 and 3, which comprises an outer wrapper portion 1 composed of an oblong rectangular sheet of paper or other material suitable for the purpose. Upon the inner side of this outer wrapper member 1 is disposed an inner wrapper member 2, which is also made of oblong or rectangular form and arranged so that its greatest length extends transversely of the length of the wrapper portion 1, so that one end of the portion ,1 will project beyond one side of the ortion 2 to provide a fold or extension 3, w ile the ends of the wrapper member 2 will project beyond the opposite sides of the member 1 and form extensions 4:, which are adapted to be twisted to form the closures for the ends of the completed receptacle'. The two wrapper members 1. and 2 are suitably attached together at one edge, as by securing one of the longitudinal side edges of the wrapper member 2 to the opposite edge of the member 1 from the extension 3 by means of paste or cement, and in order to enable the wrappers when folded to be secured in tubular or cylindrical form the wrapper 2 is provided with a coating 5 of mucilageor cement opposite its point of secure ment to the wrapper member 1. the wrapper member 1 is formed of paper or some other material of a durable nature and capable of receiving a label or printed directions stating the purpose and mode of using the contents of the holder, while the wrap per member 2 is composed of tissue-paper or some other suitable thin fabric or material whose ends or extensions 4 may be readily coiled or twisted and will maintain a twisted condition to prevent the escape of the con- I tents of the holder. If desired, the tissue-paper or other material of which the wrapper member 2 is made may be coated with paraffin or some other desirable medium of like character to render said member waterproof, so
that when the wrapper is rolled to form the receptacle the access of moisture to the contents thereof will be prevented, thus enabling substances liable to be affected by moisture to be kept for an indefinite period without deterioration.
In forming the holder or receptacle from the blank or wrapper shown in Figs. 2 and 3 the powder or other substance to be inclosed In practice is first placed upon the center of the wrapper member 2, and then the edge 3 of the member 1 is turned inwardly and the two Wrapper members 1 and 2 rolled about the material to form a tubular holder or receptacle therefor, and then the parts are closed or sealed in this condition by moistening the coated surface 5 and sticking the same to the outer surface of the member 1, and finally twisting the extensions 4 to form the end closures, as shown in Fig. 1. -This mode of filling and forming the holder or receptacle may be departed from by first forming the holder in the manner described, then twisting one of the extensions 4 to close one end thereof, filling the tube or holder through the opposite or open end thereof, and finally twisting the other extended portion 4 to close said open end, as will be readily understood. By forming the wrapper member 2 of tissue-paper or of material of like character the twisted portions 4 will retain their twistedlcondition for an indefinite period and -maintain the ends of the holder securely closed.
When it is desired to use the contents of the receptacle or holder, the holder may be shaken or tapped against a suitable surface to loosen up the contents thereof and cause the same to recede from one of the closures 4, whereupon the latter may be disrupted or torn away, thus opening one end of the holder, so that the contents may be readily and conveniently discharged.
It will be seen that a holder or receptacle constructed as above described may be produced at comparatively small cost and is of such a form as to enable a large quantity of receptacles to be packed in a small container for sale or dispensation; also, that the construction of the holder with the twisted closures 4 obviates the necessity of employing independent closing means and at the same time insures the complete retention of the contents of the holder, while permitting the same to be quickly and conveniently discharged by tearing off one end of the holder, as will be readily understood. By forming the inside wrapper or member 2 of waterproof ma terial the contents of the receptacle may be kept for an indefinite period without deterioration, thus enabling deliquescent substances or those affected by moisture to be kept at all times in a dry condition. The
holder is further advantageous in the convenience with which a powdered medicine contained therein may be administered, as the medicine may be taken by a patient while reclining and deposited upon the back of the tongue, where it can be easily swallowed without water or other liquids. A dose may thus be administered without liability of a part thereof being spilled on the clothes, person, or furniture and at a point in themouth where the sense of taste is not so keen, and the medicine will not come in contact with the teeth or gums.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and mode of operation of the invention will be understood without a further extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions, and minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is A holder for medicines, comprising a body rolled into tubular form and provided with twistable end closures, said body consisting of oblong rectangular outer and inner wrapper members arranged lengthwise at right angles to each other, one of the end edges of the outer wrapper member being gummed to one of the side edges of the inner wrapper member, whereby the opposite end ofthe outer Wrapper member and the side portions of the inner wrapper member project beyond the body to respectively provide, infolding and sealing extensions, the body thus being I adapted to be rolled and gummed or pasted to the secured edges of the wrapper member in the form of a tubular receptacle and closed by twisting the said sealing extensions of the inner wrapper member, the inner wrapper member being composed of waterproofed tissue-paper and the holder being of a size to contain a prescribed dose, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we aifix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
