Lettera Patent No. 79,311, dated June 30, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN WAGON'BODY.
tgt Srlgrb'ult rtvfrrrth ts in this: rttrrs latmt aan mali-ing part at tlg: ma.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN: Y
Be it known that I, MATTHEW 1I. CARR, of Ringwood, in the county ofMcHenry, and State of Illinois, have invented a ne and'useful Improved Wagon-Body; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and the letters and figuren marked thereon, which form'a part of this specification, and in hie Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention.
Figure 2 an elevation of the opposite side.
Figure 3 a bottom view, and
Figure 4 u front elevation.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing a wagon-body, so that the bottom thereof, which il made in sections, can be swung down to dump the load at the will of the operator.
To enable those skilled in the art to manufacture and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particularity.
The same letters of reference refer to the corresponding parts in the diilerent figures.
A represents the ordinary side-boards of the wagon-body, and Il the end-board; but'the bottom is made in Sections, as indicated by C, D, and E, which are hinged at one side so` that they will swing down.
F represents a barof iron or a strong wooden strip, which is pivoted at Il, and serves 'as a latch to hold the bottom up, by latching on to the catch I. The catch I is a metallic catch attached to the side-hoard of the wagon, and so arranged that the spring J, placed behind one end of the latch F, holds said latch pressed into the catches I. There are levers K attached to the side ofthe wagon-body, which are connected with rods yto the levers L, so that the operator, by vibrating the levers L, throws the levers K against the latches I", and by compressing the springs J, throws the latches offthe catches, when the bottom swings down. There are levers M also near the driver's seat, which have cords or chains N attached to them, and passing through loops or over pulleys O attached to the side ofthe wagon-body, are so attached tothe bottom ofthe wagon C, I). and E, that by vibratingvthc levers when the sections of the bottom are down, it will swing them up and fasten them, as shown in tig. 3. A single lever, L, could be used' to remove all the latches I" from thc catches K, so that the operator, by moving a single lever, could opcn'the bottoms to the different sections of the wagon-box, but I prefer to have a lever, L, to cach section of the bottom, so that the operator can discharge a part only of the load at his pleasure, as he may desire. There also may be only one lever M with chains N, so connected therewith that the operator with it could close the ditferent sections of the wagon-bottom. A
The dotted lines I, in iig. 1, represent partition-boards, which divide the wagon-body into compartments, and the dotted lines R represent the ordinary end-boards of the wagon-body. By this division of the interior of the Wagon-box into compartments, thc operator b v dropping one di\i.-ia,n of the hottnzn discharges only that part of the load contained in that one compartment of the wagoxi-body. ,l
S represents the ordinary axles ef :t wagon, which may be constructed, so far as the running part thereof isl concerned, iu any known way.
Having thus fully described the construction and operation of my invention, that I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the hin-ged sections of the bottom C D E, the bars F, pivotcd as described at II, thc, springs J, latches I, levers K, cords or'chains G and N, and levers L and M, all arranged and operating in the manner set forth.
MATTHEW M. CARR.
