END-GATE FOR WAGONS.

SPECIPICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,528, dated January 4, 1387 Applicntipn filed June 29, 1886. Serial No. 206,611.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY G. HIGGINS, of Winona, in the county of Winona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved End Gate for Wagons, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to the construction of an end-gate for that class of wagons employed to transport grain, potatoes, and other like articles in bulk, the object of the invention being to provide a gate which may be so moved and adj usted that the wagon may be unloaded without the necessity of taking out the tie-rod; and to this end the invention consists of a gate formed in two sections, which are made so that they meet at about the transverse center of the wagon,and are united by a pivotally-connected lever and links.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a wagonbody provided with my improved end-gate, which is represented as being closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view, wherein the gate is repre sented as partially open, the lower tie-rods in the two figures named being upon the outer side of the gate. Fig. 3 is a view of the gate and wagon, the gate being shown as partially opened, and the tie-rod as being upon the inner side of the gate; and Fig. 4 is a view of the gate as it appears when moved to a position to permit of its being removed from the wagon.

In the construction illustrated in the drawings, A represents thebody of the wagon,which, as usual, is provided with cleats B B, between which the end-gate is held, the sides of the body being prevented from spreading by the tie-rods O and D. The end-gate E consists of the sections F, G, and H, the section F,extending entirely across the wagon-body,bei'ng held,

My inventionrelates more particularly to the sections G and H and the attachments covered thereby, and the section F may be used or not, the use of such section depending upon the depth of the wagon-body. The section G car- (No model.)

mounted that it may be turned down over the arm L, as shown in Fig. 1, or be turned to clear the arm L, as shown'in the other figures of the drawings. p

With such a gate and connections as Ihave just described, it will be readily understood that when it is desired to lock the gate in place the parts are placed in the posit-ion shown in Fig. 1, with the lever K lying flat against the outer face of the sections G and H, the latch I? being at this time turned down over the arm L. When, however, it is desired to remove the gate in order that the wagon may be unloaded, the latch P is turned up to the position shown in Fig. 2, and the arm L grasped and turned out so as to stand at about right angles to the outer face of the gate. This movement of the lever K will draw the lower sections of the gate to about the position shown in Fig. 2, when by slightly raising the arm L the lower edges of the sections will be carried out clear of the bottom of the wagon, as shown in Fig. 4, after which the entire gate may be readily removed.

In Fig. 3 the tie-rod D is represented as being upon the inner side of the gate; but ordinarily I prefer to place the rod as shown in the other figures.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The combination, with a sectional endgate, of a lever pivoted to one section, a link pivoted to the other section and to the said lever, and a latch on the section to which the link is pivoted, substantially as herein shown and described.

2.
