TO ALL PERSONS TOWEGM-THESE PRESENTS MAY COME.:
Be it known that I,J'AMES ALBEE, of Boston, in' the' county ofl Suffolk, und .Stute of Massachusetts, have invented c. vnew and useful Iinprovementinl-Air-Henting Furnaces; und Ido hereby deol'arethe como towhe fully des'cribedin the following-specification, and represented in the accompanying drawings, of whichw- Figure 1 is c. front elevation, und l 'Figure2 a vertical section of my improved furnace. p
Figure 3 is o. horizontal section, this latter section being taken throughthe horizontal tlue'N-whicn eupports the evuporating-pan or vessel.
Figure 4 is another 'vertical section, it being taken through the'upright-ue pipe at .the front of the furnace.
Figure 5 is a horizontal section, taken .through the door L of the .throat K of 'the chainber or drum b', whichlsurrounds the {ire-pot.
In such drawings, A denotes the4 hre Awith a throut,'D, having a. door, E.
The irepot A opens at top into a. drum or smoke-chamber, F, which isl provided with o series of' G G, &c., 1vhich'extend from its top to lend through its bottom, and ure arranged neorlyaround the Thescpipes project below the bottom ofthe drum E, und to und through asegmentnl ring or' sir-delienf nrrangedconcentrically within ense, I, within which the drum, the refpot, and nsti-chamber are placer'.
Y The deector H directs the air,.whioh may enter the bottom of `the case`I,-`to the mouths or lower c jien ends of-the pipes G, audiulso ini-o the space whichis between thefre-pot and the extension, G', of the jy; below the drum l?. The sid pipes G are open at their upper 'es well as at their lower ends.
Within the Adrum F, und on the flanks of its' throat K, such throat having o. door, L, are two other pipes, M;M, which reach nearly to the. top of the drum, are open -utitl1eir upper ends, und go down .through the botto'm of the said drum, and open .intou horizontalconnection-Hue, N, resting on the throat of the csh-chamber.
This connection-line,- at its, two ends, opens through the case I,"on ,opposite :sidesof the evaporcting-peu orthrost Z of the case I. One end of the scid due N is closed by a cover, e, Aund the other opens' into o conduit, f, that has a register or door,g, on 'its front end, and projectsfromthe easel,l in manner -us represented. The inner end of the conduit is inserted into and 'tsto'the mouth' ol' the connectiou-ue, the other mouth of' auch ilus being adpted to receive the conduit 'in like manner. A flange, t, on the' conduit, vby contact with the case I, limits the distance of' entrance of the conduit into theue N.
' A. pipe, O, leads vertically out of the top of the conduitj, und, near the top of the drum F, receives u hranchpipegh', p'rm'idedwithaz damper, A Thisl branch-'pipe is the .direct-draunht" pipe. It opens out of the drum, and intothesmoke-dischorgepipe O.
p The pipes M M are the .indirectdrhught'pipesfund are .used to cause the sthoke and volatile product-s of4 combustion to flow into and'throngh the connection-.Hue N.
, theobjcct being to'heat it so ns to impart heet to c. \v ate r-vessel or evuporuting-pa.u P, when-.restingfou the top' of the liiueN. This vessel muy be either introhroat d, such thro'at'being' provided with a. door, Z.4
' By'havng two mouths to the flue NI :im enubledtc introduce the 4conduitfinto" either, it being romei times more convenient to use it in one than in the other, in which case the latter should be 'stopped by the covcrl'e, which, for such purpose, should' be inserted in it. I
.The ne N iny have but onepipe,-M which muy enterV the liuc near either of its` ends, so .us to cause the smoke and gnscsto flow eithe'r through or intothe said' flue, but I prefer to have two of such pipes, and to no vide one-of them, tha-tis, that one which 4is nent the cou-duit f, with c. cross-portition, u, having a. holo, o,
l s in or ahout'in equal quantities down the two pipes M M. In the place of the said orcss-pertition-and its hole, I can employ a, damper in t'he'pipe, the sumo enabling me to regulate to better .cdvuntage the amount of smoke going through the two pipes.
-pot, the grate, :mdC the csh-chamber; the A-lottenbeing provided pipes,
'mean time by heat rndiated from the' surfncesof Vthe said dr'um, the i,
F, the series of pipes G, angl their extensions G."rmnged, with the fir" The air to bc heated in the cose I enters its open bottom, impinnjaq ngainsit the deector- H, and paxlt ofib passes into and through'the pipes G G. The rest'lofitxushes into fw "pace between the pipe-'extensions G and the re-pot, and thence up into the space surrounding the smo nm, the said air being heatedl in the m3, and the fire-pot. The nir so heated may be taken from the'case I,by one or more condnits leading ont of die top ofthe case.
Imake no claim to the arrangement of p'ipes GG with the ria'um Ffnnd caso I; nor del claim thoarrangement and combination ofthe air-conduitf, the escape-pipe@ ond the pipe z, provided'ivith adamper,`
z', and one pipe 'DIL- with the drum F, its throat, and re-pot.
I claim as my invention, the following,`viz The arrangement and combination of the Hue N with either o r both' thc pipes M,| the fire-pot A, the drum F, 'the' conduit j', the escape-pipeiOfor its branch-pipe',L/, provided with e dnmpei, as described, the caseI being furnished with a throat or opening forthe passage of the evaperatizig-p21n P to and from the top of the finali', cs set forth. I l I y I also claim the arrangement :ind combination of the deiector. li *"fh the case I, the Ere-pot the drum 4 y1nd the Ere-pot, as specified'.
I also claim the combination of the damper, ox" the'pnrtition n, hw. ing; a-hoi, o, as described, with the two pipes M M, and the flue N, arranged with the fire-pot', the drum, and the cnseand combined with the couduitf andthe esccpe-ppe O, ns set forth.v p l I Ialso claim the ari'nngement of the evnporatng-pan :ind its throat with the flue N and the iire-pot.l
