IMPROVEMENT IN SLED.

Be it known that I, EDWARD L. STEVENQ'oi' Houlton, in the county of Aroostook, and State of Maine,

have invented anew and valuable Improvement in Coasting-Sleds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a mu, clear, end exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, mhking a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

I .My coasting-sled is constructed in the ordinary form, with runners, knees, and the like, ex ceptthat I fashion it in such manner that the attachments hereinafter mentioned may be readily adjusted thereto.

The letter A represents a. rudder. This is a short runner pivoted, in the manner shown, midway between tbe main'runners of the sled, to the forward roller or draught-beam B. I

Letter 0 is a bell ettnched to the extreme front or frame of the rudder.

Letter D is a spiral spring adjusted between the draught-beam B and rudder A, and islooscly clasped around the standard E, by which the rudder is pivoted to said draught-beam.

Letter G is. a. bar extending; rearward from the standard-E to the platform of the sled. It is slotted, as represented by letter H, to allow the-rudder to move back and forth. This-slot H and spring D, in combination and singly, serve to aid: the passage of the sled overobstructions and inequalities of ground, and especially do they aid in steering the some. By this means the rudder is allowedto work vertically with the spring and longitudinally in the slot. Theletters K are chains attached to the body of the sled, and theends, respectively, of the but next mentioned, Letter M is a. bar, adjusted at its centre firmly tothe top'of standard E; and letters 0 are ribbons, cords, or ropes, also attzichcd to the ends of bar M in a. similar manner with chains K. It is with these'ribbons that the sled is guided, forby their use the operator can turn the prow of the rudder in either direction, at will.

The letters S are stirrups or braces in which the operators feet are placed, and which form a substantial base or fulcrum when putting forth his strength. I

. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. The slotted bar G, in combination with the spring D, when constructed and operating substantially-as and for the purposes described.

2. .A coasting-sled, having rudder A, bell-holder and bell C, spring E, slot H, chains K, ribbons 0, and

stirrups S, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as specified.
