SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 792,456, dated June 13, 1905.
Application filed December 1, 1904. Serial No. 235,079.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. RAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sterling,
in the county of Rice, State of Kansas, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in lVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to ,which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to washing-machines, and has for its object to provide a machine including an oscillatory or swinging rubber provided with an arrangement of levers which will permit of the use of both hands of the operator, but in opposite directions, in the working of the machine.
Other objects and advantages of the invention have reference to details of structure and will be understood from the following description.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in both views, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the body of the washing-machine at one side of the rubber, the latter, with its levers, being shown in elevation. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the present washing-machine comprises a body portion including sides 5, having curved lower edges, against which is secured the curved bottom 6, which terminates at the ends 7 of the body. Secured to the sides of the body are support ing-legs 8, having suitable cross-braces 9. The inner face of the bottom 6 is provided with slats 10, which presents a corrugated surface, upon which lie the materials to be washed. Upon the upper edges of the sides and ends of the body is disposed a top 11, through which is formed a passage 12, over which is secured a cap or cover 13, which has a cavity 14:, into which the passage 12 leads and which accommodates the upper end of hangers 15, which are pivoted upon a bar 16, extending transversely of the passage 12. Additional hangers 17 are provided and are passed through a cylindrical rock-bar 18, rockingly mounted in the opening 19 in the lid 11 and projecting above and below it.
Within the body of the machine is a rubber comprising a head 20, between the sides of which are pivoted the lower ends of the hangers and 17, and from the head 20 project downwardly the fingers 21.
Pivotally mounted upon a block on one of the cross-braces of the legs of the churn is a lever 22, having a grip or handle 23 at its upper end, and pivoted to this lever is a pitman 24, which is pivoted also to the upper end of one of the hangers 17, which projects above the rock-bar 18.
In the top or lid 11 of the washing-machine is formed a slot 25, through which is passed the downwardly-extending portion 26 of a pitman, which includes also the parallel portions 27 and 28, which extend in opposite directions from the upper and lower ends, respectively, of the portion 26. The free end of the portion 28 is pivoted to the hanger 15 within the body of the churn, while the free end of the portion 27 is pivoted to a second lever 29, pivoted also to the block on the brace of the machine and having a handle or grip 30 at its upper end.
lVith this construction it will be seen that by grasping the handles 23 and 30 and operating them in opposite directions the rubber 20 will be oscillated within the body of the churn with the usual results. that the portion 26 of the second pitman moves from end to end of the slot 25 as the rubber is swung.
