Description
@einen ,grenss'twf @frn Letters .Patent No. 79,239, dated VJune 23, 1868.
IMPRVED BELT-COUPLING.
@tte dgetule meren. tu iu there intera munt mit making wt nf tige same.
TO ALL WHQM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, THOMAS SALEM LIVERMORE, of Leicester, in the county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Belts, called a Belt-Fastening or Coupling; and): do hereby declare thefollowing to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the same, due reference being had to the accompanying drawings, by the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure 1 shows my invention applied to a belt, and i Figure 2 shows the form`of ,the couplingremoved- The sume Aletters indicating the same parts in each.V
My invention consists in the `combination of n suitubly-formed screw, having a. conical or taper head, with a nut of similar make, as shown in g. 2, the conical or taper part .being of such form as to be drawn into the beltvA, and leave the outside of both the head and nut smootlrandlever with the surfuce of the belt, or nearly so. To apply it, the belt A is lapped, as shown in fig. 1, and holes made, and Ythe screw B inserted from one side, and the conical nut c the other, and a few turns of the screw bring both its head and the nut in level, clasping and holding the belt firmly and strongly. If the point of the screw projects, it may be tiled otl smooth, and the ends of the belts may be scarfed, if preferred, andthenut may be made rough or square onits under side, if desirable, though usually not necessary.
My invention gives a ready means for adjusting the length of belts, being easily removed, andnot liable to loosen by wear. It may also be used in place of rivets.
I am aware that it is common to make screws with conical heads, and that slightly-raised surfaces have been used for holding by compression; :theseI do not claim; but
-What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is. v
The ahove-described coupling, consisting of the screw, with its conical head, in combination with a nut, of similar form, capable ,of being drawn int-o the belt, when constructed yand operating in the manner and for the purposes above set forth and described.
T. S. LIVERMORE.
