PATENT OFFICE.
PROVISION-SAFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,818, dated June 6, 1905.
Application filed July 14,1904. Serial NO- 216,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH S. REED, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Provision-Safes; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the figures of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1,.a front view of a cold-storage window-box constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, an end view of the same, showing it attached to a window-sill; Fig. 3, a transverse sectional view showing the cover raised in broken lines; Fig. 4, an enlarged transverse sectional view of one end of the casing and box therein.
This invention relates to an improvement in provision safes or refrigerators such as are adapted for attachment adjacent to a window.
The utility of a cold-storage box adapted for apartments, sick-rooms, or nurseries is well known, and heretofore boxes have been produced adapted to be located adjacent to a window, but usually in front of the lower sash, so as to not only obstruct the view from the inside and shut out light and air, but also to be unsightly from the outside.
The object of this invention is to produce a cold -storage window -box or refrigerator which may not only be located adjacent to a window, so as to be accessible therefrom, but one which will not obstruct the view from the window and will not be unsightly, but, on the contrary, may be ornamental from the exterior view; and the invention consists in the construction as hereinafter described, and particularly recited in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a casing 2, which will be of the length, width, and depth according to the size of a window adjacent to which it is to be located. The ex-' terior of this casing may be made as ornamental as desired and painted to harmonize with the exterior of the building. To the back of the casing and near the upper edge one or.
more angle-irons l will be attached, whereby the casing may be secured to the window sill 5 and so that the upper edge of the casing will extend but slightly above the lower rail 6 of.
Adapted to set within the casing is a box 12, of galvanized iron or other suitable mate- .rial, which box is adapted to contain ice and the articles to be kept cool. Preferably this box will be slightly smaller in dimensions than the interior of the casing and formed at its upper edge with a flange 13, turned outward and downward into a groove 14:, formed in the upper edge of the casing. The box will also be provided at the sides or ends with handles 15, by which the box may be readily removed from the casing when desired. In one or bothends of the box are openings 16, arranged in position to register with the openings 10 in the casing, and these openings are adapted to be closed or partially closed by slides 17. In cold weather it will be unnecessary to use ice, as the slide 17 may be raised to uncover the opening 16, so as to permit a sufficient amount of cold air to enter the box to obtain the desired temperature.
As herein shown, the cover overlaps the edges of the casing, so as to make a tight joint therewith, and also serves as a cover for the inner box, although, if desired, a separate cover for that'box may be employed.
With a box thus constructed and adapted to be suspended from a window-sill and below the window-sash it is easily placed in position, convenient of access, and does not obstruct the view from the window and so as to keep out light and air, and does not detract from the appearance of the room nor from the exterior of the building. The device is simple in construction, permitting the ready removal of the box or lining .to be cleaned when desired.
I am aware that boxes adapted for use as refrigerators have been attached to windowsills and adapted to be lifted above the upper edge thereof for access thereto and do not wish to be understood as claiming, broadly, such as my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A provision-safe comprising a casing immovably secured outside a window-sill and mainly below the upper edge thereof, a cover hinged to the outer edge of said casing and overlapping the upper edge thereof, said casing formed with openings in its Walls and with a groove in its upper edge, and a removable lining in said casing, the upper edge of the said lining turned over into the said groove, said lining also formed with openings registering with the opening in the casing and provided With slides for closing or partially closing the same, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ELIZABETH S. REED.
