TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERN:v
Be it known that I, GEORGE Ff-NUTTING, of Randolph, .county of Orange, State o f Vermont, have invented certain neivland useful Improvements in Pumps; and I do hereby declare that thefollowing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure l represents a verticalV central section,
Figure 2 is elevation thereof.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. l
VThis invention relates to a pump, the barrel of which is open at its bottom end, and submerged in water. In the barrel is fitted a plunger, which receives its motion by a cage from below, and from the upper` portion of 'Said barrel-extend the suction-pipeand the ascension or delivery-pipe. Suitable valves in the suction-pipe, and
in the upper part of the barrel, ibe, tween the suction and delivery-pipes, regulate the How of the iva-ter. These valves'arc enclosed'in valve-chambers, which are clamped to their places by keys passing through hook-shaped lugs, in such a manner thatsaid valvechambers can be. readily attached or detached as occasion may require, and that but little time is required to keep the pumps in proper working order.
A represents thefbarrel ofmypump, which is open at the bottom, and provided witha solid piston-plunger,
`B. Said barrel is secured to a standard, C, and the required motion is imparted to the piston by a cage, D,
which straddles thebarrel, andfis suspended from a lever, E, the rod of the piston boing secured to its lower cross-bar by a key or other suitable fastening, as shown in iig. l.
Therupper end of the barrel A is closed by a head, F, from which emanates the delivery-pipe G, Below the head is the valverchamher'H, and from 'the side of the barrel, close below said valve-chamber, extends the Suction-pipe I. The valve lchamber Hisclam-ped to itsl place by keys a, which pass through hook-shaped lugs s ecured to the barrel A, and the joints are made tight bysuitable packing-rings, c, above and below the valve chamber. By vdriving tlie keys under the hook-shaped lugs, the head F and thc valve-chamber H are clamped dowdtight to the barrel', and, by releasing said keys, the head and valve-chamber can be readily removed, and easy accesscan be had .to'the valves.
The suction-pipe is also provided with a valve, d, which is enclosed in a chamber, e, and this chamber is secured in its place by means -of keys f, and hook-shaped lugs, g, in the same manner as the valve-chamber I-I.
.In operating-myv pump, I immerse the lotver open end in a bucket or cistern, and then I conduct the suction- 'pipe to lthe, well, which maybe situated below the bucket or cistern, or at a distance therefrom, andl by giving motion to the plunger, the Water' is made toilow in through thesuetion-pipe and out through the delivery-pipe. If the` piston descends,`the valve in the top of the'barrelcloses, andthe valve in the suction-pipe opens, and the Water rises'through said suction-pipe. If the piston rises, the valve in' the suction-pipe closes, and the water in thcwilpperpart of the barrel is forced'out thro-ugh the valve under the dcliverypipe into this pipe. Whatever amount of waterleaks past the piston or plunger is received in the bucket or cistern, in which the lower end of the barrel is immersed, and'a'chambered plunger can be used )vith very little packing, and at the same' time said plunger remains filled. If the valves, or either of them, fail to work properly, they caribe readily reached by driving oit thekeys a andf,'and very little time is required` to keep the pump in proper workingorder.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-r- The combination of-the open-bottomed barrel A, plunger B, upper removable part, containing thevalve. chamber H, eduction-pipe Gr,suction-pipe I, and valve d, all arranged in the'm'anner and for the purpose herein described and represented.
Y GEO. F. NUTTING.
