` Letters Patent No, 79,113, ma June 2s, 1868.
IMPROVED BOX.
dite rthule nitriet tnu time teitrrt ttent mit making gm nf tigt stmt TO ALL WHOM ITMAY CONCERN:l
Be it known that I, W. GUERNSEY, of' thev city, county, and.. State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in -Wooden Boxes; and I do.hereby declare thatthe followingis a-full, clear, and exactdescription of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a portion of. this specification, in which* Y l Figure 1 is a vertical transverse section of a box completo, made according to my invention. v Figure 2 is-a. horizontal section of thesame. i
Similar letters of reference' indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to that variety of boxes, the cylindrical sides of which' are composed of one or more thicknesses of thin wooden' strips or veneering, and which, as hitherto made, havebeen open to the objection that such sides have been very liable to warp out oi shape, and become detached from the bottom of the box. This invention is designed to obviate this-defect; and it consists `in fitting andcementing the edges of the sides ofthe box and cover in perpendicular grooves formed annular or otherwise inthe bottom and to-p thereof, whereby .such edges a-re so irmly'held in place that the desired object is eiiectually accomplished.
To enable othersl to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I willproceed ,to describe it,
with reference to'thedrawingsj. i i
In eachl ot" the figures, the boxes are represented as complete, that is, composed of two separate boxes,
identical in construction, one being slipped or placed over or upon theother to constitntethe cover ci' thesame, as shown more fulLy in iig. 1; each of the two being made in the same manner, except that one is`necessarily somewhat larger than the other. description of one will sucefor both.`
Provided in the .upper surface of the bottom, A, at a suitable distance from the periphery thereof, is a groove, a', which may be of any appropriate depth, and o f awidth corresponding to the thickness of the cylindrical sides B of the boxes, which are formed of oneor more thicknesses, ej', of thin s'tni'or veneer-ing. When made ot' two or 4more thicknesses,` they are glued ,or cementedjtogether, the two ends'of each thicknessbeing brought square against -each other, so that a smoothfand unbroken snrfaee'isA secured thereto; the two thicki nesses breaking joints in the manner shown ing. 2, so that on'emay hold the other in the'requisite cylindrical form. The'loweredge ofthe cylindricalsides, previous to its Ytttaehnaent to the bottom, is dipped into glue or other suitable cem-enting-material, and is then tted into the groove a in the bottom, and is thus securely xed therein, inasmuch-'as the edge is held upon both itsfinner audits outer sides by the material of the bottom; it
follows that any displacement of the same,'from-warping or like causes, is eectually prevented.
When lthe box is to be employed for holding butter orlike substances, it Lis preferred to have the. sides thereof composed of two thicknesses oi' material, as hereinbeilore fallysetforth; but in some cases, as, for
instance, in boxes designed'for lioldingp'paper collars, the sides. may consist only of a single thickness fitted'to the bottom of the box in the same manner. A v
' Having thus described m'y invention, Ido notl claim the annular groove formed asdescribed in patent No. 63.280; but .l 4 v What I claim as myl invention, and desireVto-.s'ecure by Letters Patent, isy The improv-ed box, made of veneer, with its sides fitted and cementedvinto perpendicular grooves in the heads thereof, as a new article of manufacture. l i I W;- B. GUERNSEY.
