PATENT AUGUST F. P. STENZY, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND. ASSIGNOR OF THREE- SIXTHS TO MIEOZYSLAWV BARABASZ AND ONE-S1XTH TO STEPHANIA BARABASZ, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
GARMENT-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 791,052, dated May 30, 1905.
Application filed December 22, 1904. Serial No. 237,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST F. P. STENZY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved garment-holder or stocking-engaging device.
The object of the invention is to provide a stocking-holding device that can be stamped or cut out by dies from sheet metal. A complete garter or hose-supporter is formed when the device is connected with a suitable band 5 or piece of webbing.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure 1 shows a complete garter, the metal parts of same comprising my invention. Fig.
2 is a view separately of the metal stockingengaging device. Fig. 3 is an edge view of same. Fig. 1 is a sectional view of same and of the band, showing the manner of connecting the band therewith.
2 5 The letter a designatesa band of any suitable fabric, at one end of which is secured a metal eyepiece Z), having a perforation I) at one end and three crosswise slots, in one of which suitable teeth project from the eye 3 piece. The construction of this eyepiece, however, is immaterial, and forms no part of the present invention. The other end of the fabric band is provided with my improved metal stocking-engaging device C.
The stocking-engaging device comprises a U-shaped head (Z, one arm of which has a frame 0 attached, and the other arm has teeth or prongs f, which project laterally toward the frame-arm. The frame 6 consists of two 4 side bars 4:, attached to one arm of the U-head, and three cross-bars 5, which form three open spaces or slots 1 2 3. Teeth 6 are on the crossbar that forms the open slot 2, adjoining the U- hcad. It will be observed that the middle scribed.
arm of the U-head which has the frame 6. In the operation of the device this hook engages with the hole 6 of the eyepiece b.
The frame 6 has the special construction here shown and described for the purpose of being readily attached to the end of a band or piece of webbing a without stitching. This is illustrated in Fig. 4:. In connecting the stocking-engaging device C with the band a the end of the band is first inserted from the under side up through the side slot 1, then is carried over the two cross-bars and narrow middle slot 3 and inserted down through the slot 2, then under the cross-bar having the teeth 6 and upward through the narrow middle slot 3 and over the cross-bar between the slots 3 and 1, and finally down through the wide slot 1. Two thicknesses of band will thus be over the cross-bar between slots 3 and 1 and also two thicknesses in the wide slot 1, but only one thickness in the narrow slot 3. By then drawing tightly on the band the teeth 6 will pene- 7 trate the band and prevent the parts from slipping. Thus no stitching is required to attach the device 0 to the band a.
To fasten the garter or hose-supporter about the leg. it is only necessary to place the band at around the leg above the calf, then with the fingers form a gather in the stockingand slip the U-head (Z sidewise to let the gather enter between the two arms of the U-head, then slightly draw on the device to cause the teeth 86,
f to penetrate the said gathered part of the stocking, and finally engage the hook g in the hole 6 of the eyepiece. The band will then tighten around the leg and the stocking will be supported. 3 5
This device has been described with reference to its use as a holder or supporter for stockings. It is obvious, however, it may be used as a fastener for the straps on the backs of trousers and on the backs of vests, and for 9 such use the hook g may be dispensed with. It will be understood that the arrangement of slots and teeth on the fastener device C enables the same to be readily attached and adjusted on the fabric band without the necessity of stitching.
a hole, I), and a st0ckingengagingdevice havinga U-shaped head, d, one arm of which has teeth, f, and the other arm a frame attached to the other end of said band, and a hook, g,
the frame said hook adapted to engage the hole of the eyepiece, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
