Description

M'OSESCALVER'T, or MARSHALL, OHIO.
Letters Patent No. 'l9,l03, alated June 23, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHURNS.
flit: 5x11211111: meat in in ttm 3mm fitted ant mating rat at its tilmt.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, MOSES CALVERT, of Marshall, county of Highland, and State ofv Ohio, have invented an Improved Churn and Ihereby declare the following 'to be an exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this'specification, in which Figure 1 is aside elevation of the churn, and gearing-devices for operating it.
Figure 2 is a front vies of the same.
Figure 3 is an end view of the lower heater. v
Figure 4 is a side view of the heaters asattached to the upright lever.
Figure 5 is a top view of the heaters.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement and combination of the heaters of the churn, and the manner in which they are operated, with the devices, as located on an upright frame.
Atrepresents an upright frame-piece, attached to the end of a'square base, B, and supported by two inclined rods, 0 Qattached to each side of the frame-piece A and the base, B;
A front frame-piece, D, supported by two braces, E E, above and below, is attached to the upper half of the frame'piece A. f 4 I W The frame-pieces A and D are the supports for the shafts onjournals G and H; On the upper shaft, G,
I is a small pulley-wheel, I, driven by beltJ, that runs on a larger pulley-wheel K, which is operated by a crank,
L, at the rear side of the frame.
On one end of the shaft G, at the front side, and near the top of the frame, a balance-wheel, M, is attached, which is connected with the pitman and lever N by the pin 0, so as to drive the heaters in the churn P vertically, with a free and accelerated motion. Q is a guide, to maintain the proper position of they lever N.
The lower heaters, R, are formed of two cross-pieces, mortised together, and bevelled to a sharp edge above and below, the ends of each piece having an open slot, S, so as to allow the heaters R to divide and thoroughly break the cream.
A short distance above the lower heaters, R, are two or more square heaters, T T, set crosswise through the upright lever N, with their sharp edges above and below, also forthe purpose of assisting in dividing and breaking the cream. I i
The advantages of this arrangement and combination are the absence of cog-gearing in the working-devices,
therefore making'no noise Whilst in operation; its-economy and simplicity of construction, and the facility with which it is operated, by which a small child cen, with the greatest ease, do the churning, which is generally a laborious operation. a g V What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'- The construction and combination of the frame, gearing, and dasher, when arranged and operating as herein described, and for the purposes set forth.
MOSES CALVERT.
