GLIMSETAL, of Mineral Point, in the 'county of Iowa, and State of Wisconsin, have invented new and useful Improvementsin Extension-Horses orTrestles, and we do hereby declare that"the.following -is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will 4enable others skilled in the art to make anduse lthe same, reference .being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of thisspecication. `This invention relates toA a'portable trestle-horse, for scaiolding-and other purposes, and consists of elevating and extension-devices, which will hereinafterbe more fully set forth. i
The general points ofthe invention are shown by the drawings, and consist of a trestle or horse, composed of upper legs, A, which work with slidingcont'act upon the' extension-legs A', the legs A being bolted to horizontal extension-girders and D Vby a bolt and nut,'as shown at r, andwillibe further described at the proper connection.
We will first'setforth the elcvating-mechanismby inea-ns of which the height of the trestle is increased or4 diminished.
The legs A and A slide by each other within ironv bands'n. and n', the said bandsV being screwed or bolted to the legs A, and thus provide a means of holding the legs rmly bythe lapped parts or doublingsof vthe same.v
The legs aud elevating-devices of the same being alike-at both. ends of the trestle, we describe minutely v only oneend.
.Au-elevating-screw, G, has its upper bearing. on the end f the extension-girder D or D', as shown. The
lower bearing is shown at d', it being a lug projecting from the cross-brace z", (best shown at fig. 5,) and. through a hole in this lug the reduced end, g, ofthe screen/G projects, the said lug acting simply to steady thescrew. A collar' and washer, s and s', are on the upper part of the' screw G, to bear against the girdcr D at that point, and transmit the thrust of the screw to the upper parts of the trestle.
The screw projects through a hole in theplatform-plank B, and terminates., in a square arbor, g, on which 4lits a. crank,`g, for turning the screw when the platform is to be elevated or lowered; for, as will beevident, when the said screwisturncd to elevate the platform B, the hollow screw in the cross-bar being held stationary thereby, causes the screw to be elevated, and with it the upper parts of the horse, to which the' platform 'is' attached, ,by the collar and washer, s and s', impinging'against the girderD.
When the platform is to be'lowere'd, the screw is turned rev'ersely, and the platform and legs A, :attached thereto, descend their own weight as the screw is turned. The same actiony obtains at the other end of the trestle when the screw of that end is turned Vin like manner.
The lateral extensionof the trestle and platform requires '.no mechanism to' actuate it in being extended,
b ut is simply grasped by the legs, or other convenientparts, and drawn 'away laterally. This extension is p'crmitted by devices now to be described. I I

These two girders'work parallel and in lateral contact with each other, and their surfaces of contact are pro. vided with a tongue-and-groove device, the groovercextending from'the boltr to the commencement ofthe slot e in the girders. A short tongue at the end of each girder lits in the slot of 'the corresponding girder.
Thepslot e is formedin each girder, abouthalf its length from theinner, end of the girder, and is for the purpose of permitting the presence ofthe bolt r, whichholds the girders together, and, at the same time, forms thebase and support of the central brace d', by which the platforms B B are held together, and yet permitted to slide in easy contact past each other.
This brace a is shown in sectionat lig. 3. The lower vends of the brace are held bythe bolt r', which passes thrOltgll Slots in the said ends, the nut and headl of the bolt serving to keep the slotted ends ofthe brace closely against the girders-when the same are clamped by the bolt-nut. i
A guide, a, is riveted 'or otherwise attachedrmly to the brace a, and acts as a guide to hold the planks B B together, while permitting them to slide freely.
The braces a, at the ends of the trestle, are secured by the bolts r, as shown. The planks are bolted er .otherwise fastened to the horizontal part of the end-braces a, but the middle brace, a', is free to move horizon.- tally with the passage of the bolt 1 (to which it is attached) in the slots, eff the guides,thus conducing Vtothe frc'e extension of the trestle.
Diagonal braces, confer rigidity and firmness to the wooden parts of the trestle propel'. These braces rise from the cross-pieces i', into which they are hooked by means of the slots in the crossp'iece and hooked lpart b, as shown at fig; 5.
l Rising thence, they crossl each other, and their upper ends are held in plates m, the ends of the braces being turned to form an Aeye or knuckle, which ts into a corresponding lcavity in the said plates m, as this form of connection will permit the requiredV vibration of the rods when the trestle is to-be brought into a smaller compass, requisiteforportability.
The plates m are bolted to the under side of the girder to which they belong, respectively. Y A'short chain, terminating in a ring, is attached to each of the bolts r by arr eye o n the screw-end of said bolts, and are for the purpose of preserving the nut' and washer from loss or'misplalcement when't'he trestle is being reduced in compass. It also permits the complete Aseparation of the legs A from the girde'rsin like case.
When thetrestle is to be reducedtin compass, and thereby made more portable, it is accomplished by. 'unscrewing the nutsfrom the bolts 1', and unhooking'thc braces t from the cross-bars z", and unh'goking the cross-bar z' from the hooksf, which can be accomplishedwhen lthe legs A are loosely 'hanging by the chains and rings aforesaid, for the screw-ends g: can then be lifted from the lugs d, and the screwswithdrawn from their upper bearings. The cross-bars z" are also unhooked from one side, where they have bent ends,.whicl1 catch in eye-bolts, or their equivalent. The other ends are provided with an eye, -which is linked with another eye? bolt, or its equivalent. This arrangement is shown atriig. 2, and is for the purpose of perm'itting'the disconnecting of the adjacent parts, when the trestle is to be taken down and folded.
The trestle is then closed up laterally, and the legs and other parts folded as shown'in igure,-being thus in a convenient portable form, as .shown'at iig. 7. l
The eccentric-clamp, shown at ig. 6, is for'the purpose of attaching additional legs to the legs Ahwhen it is required -to elevate the platform higher than the legsl A will permit. This clamp consists of a band, 7c, for clamping.against the vsocket H two strengthening-strips, p, the said socket being of metal, and containing the' abutting ends of the leg A and a supplementary leg, A. `l
The ends of the band 7c terminate in hooks, as shown, in which hooks the reduced ends of the eccentric- 'clamp roller'p are held. A handle, b', forms part of the clamp-roller, and 1the latter is operated by it in the usual manner.
The upper ends ,of the legsA are notched, as shown, and tit on a corresponding notch in the ends of the .gil-ders, as shown at iig. 8.. This device is for the purpose of preventing the legs from working down when sustaining the thrust ofthe screw G in elevhting the platforms. i

The invention-is designed as an improvement on one previously patented byone of the present applicants,
an'd'while being simple, cheap, and durable, is easily operated, andconducive to the perfect -working 'of a portable trestle or` horse for sca'olding or oth-er purposes.
