Description

No. 790.436. I PATENTED MAY 23, 1905.

BUILDING BLOCK.
APPLIUATION IILED'NOV. 15, 1904.

UNITED STATES.
Patented May 23, 1905.
ORION D. INMAN, OF BELOIT, WISCONSIN.
BUILDING-BLOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,436, dated May 23, 1905,
Application filed November 15,1904. Serial No. 232,801.
T or whom it may concern.-
Be it .known that'I, ORION D. INMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beloit, in the county of Rock and State of Wisconsin,
have invented certain new and useful Im-' clearly set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
The prime object of my invention, among others, is to provide asimple though reliably efficient form of building-block which may be employed in building up a wall which will possess a single or double hollow space, thus making a wall of great desirability, possessing a maximum amount of strength and at the same time being so open in character that it will be entirely free from dampness.
A further object of my invention is to enable the workmen to rapidly build up the wall by the use of my building-blocks.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter made clearly apparent, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, and in which Figure 1' shows a perspective view of my invention complete as applied to use. Fig. 2 shows a cross-section of my building-blocks, one laid upon the other to illustrate a double space formed in the wall. Fig. 3 shows two of my building-blocks, one cooperating with the other in the work of building a wall having a double space. Fig. 4: shows the employment of my building-blocks to form a wall having a single hollow space orinterior.
In materializing my invention 1 provide a plurality of building-blocks of peculiar formation adapted to cooperate with each other in building up a wall possessing a single space or in building up a wall having a double air space, said air-spaces paralleling each other and communicating, if desired, or left wholly separated.
In order to conveniently describe my invention, numerals will be employed, the same numeral applying to a similar part throughout the several views, and, referring to the nus merals'on the drawings, 1 designates the main vertical portion of my building-block, while 2 indicates a horizontal section, and 3 thelesser vertical section, and, as will be seen in Fig. 3, a block formed in this manner presents an L shape in cross-section and may be readily placed in cooperative relationship with each other, as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of building up a wall having two air-spaces, as designated by the numeral 4, or said blocks may be incorporated with each other in a manner to provide a wall with a single air-space, as designated by the numeral 5 in Fig. 4.
That form of wall illustrated in Fig. 4 will be found very desirable and useful for partition-walls in buildings where it is desired that the wall shall occupy a minimum amount of space.
In Fig. 1 I have shown special corner-blocks having a vertical portion 6 and a solid cubelike section 7, the said blocks being builded upon each other so as to break the joint, and thus form a wall of great solidity and strength.
My improved building-blocks may be very cheaply and expeditiously manufactured from any suitable plastic material and afterward left to harden or set or to be burned, as when clay is the material employed. 7
'My improved building-blockswill produce a wall which will be thoroughly ventilated on its interior, and thus always remain in a dry sanitary condition.
Believing that the advantages, construction, and manner of using my improved buildingblock have thus been made clearly apparent, further description is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described building-block adapted to build a wall 'of single or double hollow spaces or openings, consisting of ablock which is substantially L shape in cross section, each block having a vertical portion 1 and 3, and ahorizontally-disposed section 2 connecting said vertical sections, the vertical portion 1 being twice the length of the vertical portion 3, whereby when a wall of double strength and having two air-chambers is desired, one-half the blocks are inverted and the Vertical portions 3 placed one upon the other to form the central partition, and when a Wall of single strength and having a single airspace is desired one-half of the blocks are inverted and the vertical portion 1 of the in- Verted block placed upon the portion 3 of the I opposite block and the portion 3 of the inverted block upon the portion 1 of the opposite block substantially as specified and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two sub- I 5 scribing witnesses.
