Description

BULKHEAD FOR ENGINE FRAMES.
- APPLICATION FILED AUG. 25.1904.
Iwveqtor! 4 4444 yfz'wwe 7' ,rM/h/ 47 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
Patented May 23, 1905.
LE GRAND SKINNER AND JOHN (J. GLENN, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA;
' SAID GLENN ASSIGNOR TO SAID SKINNER.
BULKHEAD FOR ENGINE-FRAMES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,402, datedMay 23, 1905.
Application filed August 25, 1904. Serial No. 222,160.
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that we,Ln GRAND SKINNER and J OHN O. GLENN, citizens of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have jointly invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bulkheads for Engine-Frames; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de-- scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to steam-engines; and it consists, substantially, of a removable bulkhead in the engine-frame, and is designed to prevent the water leaking from the enginecylinder from entering the trunk portion of the engine-frame and there mixing with the oil usedto lubricate the engine, as well as to prevent the oil from coming in contact with the cylinder.
The features of this invention are hereinafter fully set forth and explained, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in
v which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the engine-frame on the line a: w' in Figs; 2 and 3. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the engineframe on the line y y in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top or plan view of a portion of the engine-frame, showing the cylinder-head, the bulkhead, and the cross-head supports therein. Fig. 5 is a side view in elevation of one part of the upper section of the removable bulkhead. Fig. 6 is a side view in elevation of the other part of the upper section of the removable bulkhead. Fig. 7 is a side View in elevation of the removable bulkhead. Fig. 8 is a top or plan view of the same. v
In the drawings, A is an engine-frame provided with crosshead guide-supports B B and with an oil-chamber O, a cylinder-head A, a piston-rod A and in Fig. 1 cross-head guides D, a section of the piston-rod cross-head E and of the stuffing-box a. in the cylinder-head A are also shown for the purpose of showing the relation of the bulkhead thereto, they,
however, being of the usual construction.
At a point between the cross-head guides D D and the stuffing-box a in the cylinder-head IA there is provided a transverse partition or bulkhead in the engine-frame A, consisting, substantially, of a transverse wall F, having therein an opening F, the lower portion of which opening is preferably made semicircular in section, substantially up to the plane of the center of the piston-rod A and adapted to receive a semicircular lower section G. (See Figs. 7 and 8.) This section G is provided with peripheral flanges g, adapted to embrace the portion F of the bulkhead, and 5 is also provided with a recess 9 to receive packing g (see Figs. 1 and 3) around the piston-rod A When the part G is in place, the part H, Fig. 6, of the upper section is secured to the part G by means of screws it h and 7 also to shoulders ff on the stationary part F of the bulkhead by means of screws f f, so that the parts G and H are secured together around the piston-rod and also socured to the stationary part F of the bulkhead. Above the part H there is a section I, Fig. 5, which has its edges and bottom grooved, so that it will slide down in the slot F in the part F and cover the part H and the joint formed therewith and complete the bulkhead, 30
as clearly shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. It will be observed that while this bulkhead forms a complete transverse wall in the engine-frame, yet the parts I, H, and G thereof can be quickly removed from the stationary part F, 5
so as to give easy access to the stufling-box a and be readily replaced thereon.
Having thus described a convenient construction of this invention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to construct and use 9 the same, we do not desire to confine ourselves to the exact construction herein shown and described, as the same may be considerably modifiedwithout departing from the spirit of our invention.
Therefore what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Patent of the United States, is
1. In a steam-engine frame, a transversebulkhead, a portion of which is integral with the engine-frame and having a slot therein, and removable upper and lower sections adapted to be secured in said slot so as to form the complete bulkhead, substantially as set forth.
2. In a steam-engine frame, a transverse bulkhead between the cylinder-head and crosshead guides a portion of which is integral with the engine-frame, and having a vertical slot therein, and removable sections adapted to embrace the piston-rod, and be secured in the slot in the fixed section so as to form the complete bulkhead, substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam-engine frame, a transverse bulkhead between the cylinder-head and the cross-head guides, a portion of which is integral with the engine-frame, and having a vertical slot therein, the bottom of which is semicircular, a semicircular removable section adapted to engage the semicircular portion of said slot, an intermediate upper section adapted to be secured to said semicircular section and to shoulders in said slot, and
an upper section adapted to close the upper Gr. J. MEAD, FLORENCE STOCKERT.
