HENRY J. MORELAND, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
PlSTON -RQD PACKING SPECIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,750, dated July 16, 1901.
Application filed January 18, 1901. Serial No. 43,76 7. (lilo model.)
1'0 coZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY J. MORELAND,
of Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Piston-Rod Packing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention contemplates certain new and useful improvements in means for packing rods, such as piston-rods, valve-rods, (he.
The primary object of the invention is to avoid locating the packing close to a cylinder-head, therebypreventing burning and enabling the packing to be removed and restored without inconvenience; secondly, to enable the stuffing-box to be moved longitudinally on the rod away from the cylinder when fresh packing is to be introduced; thirdly, to reduce friction to a minimum; fourthly, to provide improved means for preventing escape of steam, and, fifthly, to reduce the quantity of packing required in the stuflingbox.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation with parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view. Figs. 3 and 4: are cross-sectional views on lines 3 and 44, respectively, Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a cylinder-head; 2, a hollow boss projecting from said head having a slight cut-out or re cess 3 in its outer end, the diameter of the bore of said boss being fractionally above the diameter of the piston-rod 4.
5 is a stuffing-box having a central bore 6 to acconimodate rod 4, which bore, leads from a counter-bore 7 in one end designed to receive the boss 2, which latter when the stuffing-box is in position fits against packing 8 within the counterbore, said packing binding,
wardly from the cylinder-head. A lubrieating-cup 15 opens intoa circular groove or channel 16 within the stuffing-box, so that the packing on each side of the channel will always be well lubricated, said channel also acting as a seal to prevent the escape of steam,-
since any steam entering therein will be at once condensed.
From what has been said the advantages of my invention are apparent to those skilled in the art. packing is to be supplied by removing the nuts from rods 1a the stufling-box may be moved longitudinally on the rod away from the cylinder-head; that in its normal position the stuffing-box and the packing contained therein are held away from the cylinderhead, thus preventing the packing from being burned or affected by the heat of the cylinder; that less packing is required than necessary in the present style of stuffing-boxes, since packing is employed only in the two ends of the box; that friction is reduced to a minimum by closing the stuffing-box and bringing it as close to the rod as practicable without interference therewith, and that the inner channel surrounding the rod provides a space for lubricant which will keep the packing at all times well lubricated as well as act as a seal to prevent the escape of steam. It is obvious that the invention is applicable wherever a stuffing-box and packing are required.
I claim as my invention-'- 1. The combination with a hollow boss having a bore for the passage of a reciprocating rod, of a stufling box, packing therein, and means for locking said box in position, said box having a bore designed to receive said boss and hold said packing against the end of the latter, as set forth.
2. The combination with a cylinder-head having a hollow boss projecting therefrom, said boss having a bore for the passage of a reciprocating rod, of a stuffing-box carrying packing therein and designed to inclose said boss and hold said packing against the end thereof, and means for locking said box and holding it away from said head, as set forth.
3. The combination with a hollow boss having a bore for the passage of a reciprocating rod, of a stuffing-box having a central bore It will be observed that when fresh for such rod and a counterbore for said boss, packing within said counterbore, and means for locking said stuffing-box, as set forth.
4:. The combination With a cylinder-head having a hollow boss through the bore of which a reciprocating rod is designed to be passed, of a stuffing-box having a central bore for such rod and a counterbore for said boss, packing Within said box designed to fit against the end of said boss, and nutted rods projecting from said head for holding said stuffing-box, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with a cylinder-head having a hollow boss projecting therefrom,
of a stuffing-box having a bore and a counterbore in each end in one of which said boss is designed to fit, packing within said counterbores, a gland in the other counterbore, and means for locking said stuffing-box to said cylinder-head, substantially as set forth.
6. A stuffing-box having a bore for the passage of a reciprocating rod, and counterbores in its end, and a circular groove or channel intermediate said counterbores, packing Within the latter, and a lubricating-cup opening into said groove or channel in combination with a hollow boss designed to fit in one of said counterbores, as set forth.
7. The combination with a cylinder-head having a hollow boss, of a stuffing-box having a counterbore designed to receive said boss, and an innergroove or channel, packing with in said counterbore and 011 each side of said groove or channel, a lubricating-cup opening into the latter, and means for locking said 35 stuffing-box to said cylinder-head, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
