ROTARY CLEANER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 790,371, dated May 23, 1905. Application filed October 24, 1902. Serial No. 128,558.
To /Y/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. LABADIE, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use` ful Improvements in Rotary Cleaners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a rotary cleaner for scraping or scouring the surfaces of nuts, caps, hand-hole plates. and boiler-heads of steam-boilers to remove the incrustation or rust therefrom.
Most all water-tube boilers have a handhole formed in the header opposite each tube, such hand-hole being closed by a nut or cap which is removed when the Hues are cleaned, and the present invention is designed to remove the corrosion from the flanges and other surface of the caps in order that the parts may form steam-tight joints when fitted together; and to these ends the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, all as will be more fully described hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in

Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a rotary spindle journaled in a suitable head 4. The rotary .spindle'isprovided at one end with a'handle 2, and upontheother end of the spindle is mounted for rotation with the same'a scraping member comprising a disk 3, carrying scraping-blades 10, hereinafter described. The head 4 consists of a disk-shaped block having raceways on each face,which'aline with raceways formed in the disk 3, and Va flanged collar 5, and in which there are fitted balls 6 and 7 to form a thrust ball-bearing for the disk and spindle. Secured to the block and extending from one side thereof is a cylindrical extension 8,which surrounds the spindle and provides a convenient hand-grasp when the machine is in use. By mounting the head on the spindle between the flanged collar 5 and the disk 3 a thrust ball-bearing is provided for the spindle. On the inner face of the disk 3 there is formed an annular fiange 9,which incloses the periphery of the head 4 and serves as a guard to prevent the scra'pings or other impediments Working between the head and disk. At the outer edge of the disk 3 are formed sockets 11 for the reception of the scraping-blades 10, provided with slots a at their inner ends. The blades 10 are adjustably secured in the sockets 11 by clamping-screws t, which pass through the slots a of the blades and have a threaded engagement with one of the side walls of each of the sockets, the heads of the clamping-screws I) lying in apertures o, formed in the opposite side walls ofthe sockets and frictionally engaging the blades. A scouring device consisting of a smaller disk 12, faced with emery-paper, is also mounted on the spindle to rotate therewith and is employed for scouring the faces of small nuts or caps of boilers. The disk 12A forms a backing for the emery-paper, which may be secured by a nut 13 or similar device. The spindle is revolved by means of a sleeve 14, adapted to engage the spiral grooves 16, formed in the spindle, so that when the sleeve is reciprocated longitudinally on the spindle the latter will be rotated in the head 4, and the cap or hand-hole plate, which is held ina vise, will be acted on by the scraping-blades and the emery-paper to remove the incrustation or rust which has accumulated thereon. Springs 17 are secured to the head by a jam-nut 18 in order to give movement to cutting-knives before contacting with the face of nut, cap, or hand-hole to be cleaned, the pressure of operator on the knob 2 revolving the disk 3 and overcoming the tension of springs 17, thus bringing knives 10 in contact with surface to -be cleaned or scraped while revolving.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent. is
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with a relatively fixed head, a scouring member rotatably mounted upon the front of the head, means carried by the head for rotating the scouring member, and bowed springs carried by the head and projected across the periphery of the scouring member and at the front thereof to form an initial yieldable support for the head.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination with a relatively fixed head having concentric raceways in the back and front thereof, of a tubular hand-grasp carried by the head and inclosing the raeeway in the back thereof, a rotatable spindle extending through the hand-grasp and piercing the head, said spindle having its rearend portion provided with a spiral and also provided with an external annular shoulder within tbe hand-grasp and provided with a raeeway eerresponding to the raceway in the back of the head, antifriction devices in said raceways, a scraping member carried by the forward end ofthe spindle and provided with a raceway correspoi'iding to the raeeway in the front oi the head, antit'riction devices in said race- Ways, bowed springs carried by the head and projected across the periphery of the scraping member and in front thereof, and a reciprocating operating-sleeve embracing the spi ral portion of the spindle and having a part engaging the same to rotate said spindle and scraping member.
