Specification of Letters Eatent.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. PINKER- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and count-y of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gasket-Seat Cleaners for Tater-Tube Boilers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of my invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gasket seat cleaners for water tube boilers and has for its primary object the facilitation of cleaning the gasket seats surrounding the hand holes in the hand hole plate of a boiler. The hand holes in boiler heads are closed by what is known as hand hole caps. These caps must it close against the hand hole plate in order to make tight jointsbetween the caps and the said plate. In order to make these joints perfectly tight, it is necessary to thoroughly clean the surface of the plate around the hand holes on which the gaskets are seated, and in resetting the gaskets, it is necessary to remove all parts of the old gaskets, as well as any corrosion which may have collected on the boiler head plate. f
My invention is intended to remove these old gaskets and to clean the hand hole plates, whereby the gaskets may be reset in such a manner as to prevent leakage.
In theuse of my invention, many objects and advantages embodied in the construction and arrangement of the invention will readily appear.
I will now proceed to describe my invention with reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part hereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of my improved gasket seat cleaner for water tube boilers, the said view showing theapplication of the latter to one of the hand holes of a boiler hand hole plate. Fig. 2 is a plan view of my improved gasket seat cleaner for water tube boilers.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views in the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Let the numeral 5 represent a hand hole plate of a water tube boiler, and 6 one of the hand holes therein. It is understood that this hand hole 6 is for the purpose of giving access to a tube and that the same is normally closed by means of a water tight cap. The tool which I employ for cleaning the seats for these caps or gaskets comprises a stem 7, having a transverse scraper or knife 8, which passes through an opening 9 formed in the forward extremity of the said stem 7. This knife 8 is of square shape in cross section and scrapes the seats of the gasket-s rather than cutting the foreign material therefrom. The forward extremity `of the stem 7 is provided with threads, as shown at 10, and a nut 12 is threaded on the forward extremity of said stem and when screwed down, locks the knife 8 in a fixed position. The stem 7 passes through a slide designated in its entirety by the reference character 13. This slide 13 is interposed between the knife 8 and an operating member 14, while a hand wheel 15 is threaded upon the outer extremity of the said stem 7 beyond the operating member 14.
The slide 13 comprises a disk 16 of greater diameter than the hand hole 6 and is provided with an extension 17 of less diameter, which projects into the hand hole 6. The disk 16 is provided with arms 18 extending therefrom and supporting a hub 19 through which the stem 7 passes. The stem 7 also passes through an opening in the disk 16 and extension 17, whereby the slide 13 is movably mounted upon the stem 7 The operating member 14 comprises a casting having an opening therethrough, through which the stem 7 passes. A pin 2O passes through the opening of the casting and through a slot 21 longitudinally arranged in the stem 7, whereby the casting comprising the operating member 14 is longitudinally movable on the stem 7, but is prevented from turning on the latter independently thereof. Handle members 22 are received in openings formed on the side of said casting and project radially therefrom, thus forming a leverage, by virtue of which the operating member 14 may be actuated to cause the stem 7 to turn, which in turn carries the knife 8 therewith.
In operation, the knife 8 is first placed in the hand hole 6 in engagement with the inner side of the hand hole plate 5, and by tightening the hand wheel 15, the casting 11i is caused to move upon the stem 7, the slot .21 permitting of said movement, and this movement of the said casting causes the slide 13 to also move upon the stem 7 until the said slide engages the plate lIhe stem T is then rotated by means of the op erating member 1t, through the medium of the handles 22, the rotation of the stem 7 causing the knife 8 to rotate therewith, resulting in scraping the gasket, or any other obstructing matter, oit of the plate and thoroughly cleaning the latter, so that the hand hole cap may be reset. The knife 8 may be tightened against the plate, as may be desired,by turning the hand Wheel 15. New, assuming that the Work has been completed, the tool may be removed by loosening the hand Wheel 15, whereby the operating member 11i and the slide 13 may be slid rear'- Wardly on the stem 7, enabling the knife to be turned at an angle so that one end of the knife may be passed through the opening 6. In inserting the knife 8 into the hand hole, it is also necessary to t-urn the latter at an angle to the horizontal so that one end of the knife Will pass into said hand hole first.
From the foregoing description it Will be seen that the slide 13 remains stationary when the tool is applied tothe hand hole plate and that the stem 7 revolves independently of the said slide. This is a decided advantage and improvement in myy invention over prior devices, since heretofore, so far as I am aware of, the member accomplishing the function of my slide 13 must revolve with the knife or scraping member. Such a construction is of great disadvantage and eflieient` and practical use is rendered impossible, due to the friction which Will be produced in devices wherein the slide must revolve with the knife.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and" desire to secure by Letters Patent is z- 1. A tool of the class described, comprising a stem, a transverse scraper 'passing through the inner extremity of said stem, a slide longitudinally movable on said stem, a tightening member threaded on said stem, and an operating member for said slide interposed between said tightening member and said slide, the said tightening member being longitudinally movable on said stem, and the slide being provided With a part adapted to engage one side of a boiler head, While the scraper is adapt-ed to engage the opposite side of the boiler head, substantially as described.

A tool of the class described, comprising a stem, a transverse scraper carried by one extremity of said stem, a slide mounted on said stem and provided With a part adapted to engage one side of a boiler head, the said part being provided With an eX- tension adapted to be received in a hand hole of said boiler head, a tightening member threaded upon said stem, a casting interposed betweensaid slide and said tightening member, the said stem being provided with a slot and the'said casting having a pin passing through said slot, whereby the said casting is longitudinally movable upon saidv stem, and radially arranged handles carried by said casting, the said stemibeing adapted to be turnedfor operating the said scraper, While the said slide remains stationary.
