vP19EU9/IAT9 TIRE.
APPLICATION ILBD APB.. 18, 1904.
UNITED STATES Patented May 23, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
PNEUMATIC TIRE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 790,279, dated May 23, 1905. Application iledApril 18, 1904. Serial No. 203,689.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, RICHARD BELLING- I-IAM, residing at St. Georges Road, and J AMEs BLooMFIELD, residing at Gable House, Beccles, county of Suffolk, England, subjects of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Pneumatic Tires for Cycles and Motor Road-Vehicles,'of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pneumatic tires for cycles and motor road-vehicles, and is designed more especially for use in connection with the outer covers thereof, but is equally applicable to single-tube tires; and it consists in the application of` a nonpuncturable band or belt of stack canvas treated with a cement solution and inclosed in a cover, all as hereinafter described, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which-- Figure l is a sectional view illustrating our invention as applied to the outer cover of a pneumatic tire. Fig. 2 illustrates the same as applied to a single-tubetire, and Fig. 3 is a part-perspective view showing the covering and its inclosed band or belt.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In carrying our invention into effect we take a strip (the non-puncturablc strip or belt) ct of stackcanvasthat is, canvas composed of hemp or iaX- about one and threev quarter inches wide and coat and impregnate the same with a cement solution, preferably f a solution composed of shellac and resin dissolved in methylated spirits. This strip we protect byanother strip, (the protectingstrip,) likewise of stack-canvas about one and a half inches wide, and the two strips a b we back by a further strip c (the backing-strip) of the same material. These three strips,
fastened together by means of a solution of shellac, resin, and glue, we now Incase In a cover d, of cotton-webbing, and fix the whole to the inner surface of the outer cover or tube, as the case may be, and at the head portion thereof. The cover d we form in a strip having Vflaps e e (see more especially Fig. 3) and narrow edges ff, the flaps serving when meeting at g and fastened down to completely inclose the canvas strips above mentioned. To insure a perfect fit circumferentially, a lap is allowed at the ends of the strips, so that they may fit one over the other.
In use the puncture-preventing band is arranged in the outer cover la., Fig. 1, or tube c', Fig. i2, as the case may be, in such a manner that the flaps e e of the cover d are immediately over the inner tube j or face toward the interior of the tube and the plain part and edges ff of ysaid cover facing the inner surface of the outer cover /t or of the tube c', the whole belt or band being fixed in position by any well-known means.
In the foregoing description the dimensions given apply only to cycles and motor-cycles,
it of course being understood that it is only necessary in the case of motor-cars and the like to increase in proportion the width, thickness, and strength of the band or belt.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A puncture-preventing band comprising a strip impregnated with a suitable solution; a protecting-strip and a backing-strip secured `together and to the Erst-named strip by a cement solution; and a casing for the band, said casing comprising a body portion having flaps, the edges of the flaps being adapted to meet and thereby completely inclose the band. In testimony whereof we have affixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
