DUST-GUARD FOR VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1905.
Application filed September 17, 1904. Renewed June 9, 1905. Serial No.- 264,532.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that we, J OSEPH E. LEVERMON'I and GUY .LR-EEmcitizens of the United States, residing at Cody, in the county of Cherry and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Dust-Guards for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention provides a novel form of cap or guard device adapted to be secured to a vehicle-axle so as to protect the hub portion of the adjacent wheel and prevent dust, grit, or like foreign matter from getting between the axle-box and the axle-spindle and causing undue wear upon these parts in a manner apparent to those versed in the art to which the invention relates.
For a full description of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction of the means for eflecting the result reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings.
\Vhile the essential and characteristic features of the invention are susceptible of modification, still the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view showing the invention applied, parts broken away. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the guard alone. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the guard embodying the invention.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
In carrying out the invention-a split band or casing 1 of circular form is provided, this casing being made, preferably, of leather or similar flexible material and of a size adapted to receive the inner portion of the hub of a vehicle-wheel. The casing 1 is open at one end, so as to receive the portion of the hub of the vehicle-wheel above mentioned, being closed at the opposite end, so as to prevent foreign matter from lodging between the axlebox of the wheel and the spindle of the axle. To close the end of the casing 1, as above described, end pieces 2 are utilized, said pieces being of approximately semicircular form and made, preferably, of rubber or like resilient substance. The end pieces 2 of the casing 1 are adapted to fit about the square portion of the axle adjacent the spindle, and for this purpose the adjacent straight edges of the end pieces 2 are provided with notches or recesses 3, which receive the axle snugly therein when the guard is closed and in actual working position. In order to secure the end pieces 2 of the casing 1, plates 4 are used, and these p ates are also of semicircular form, conforming to the shape of the end pieces. Curved flanges 5 are projected from the curved edges of the plates 4, and these flanges overlap the closed end of the casing 1. Fastenings 6 pass through the flanges 5 to each plate 4 and secure said plate to the casing,
' and at the same time the end pieces 2 are attached to the bodies of the plates 4 by suitable fastenings. Any suitable number of fastenings 6 may be employed, and it will be noted that the plates 4 protect the end pieces, which latter fit snugly above the axle, the plates 4 being also provided with suitable notched or recessed portions extending adjacent the portions 3 of the end pieces 2. The body of the casing 1 may be spread open readily, being split longitudinally, as above described, and said casing being made of flexible material, the split portions thereof having a sort of hinge or flexible connection, admitting of the opening or closing movement of the casing before premised.
To secure the guard or cap to the axle, we provide a loop 7, pivoted to one of the plates 4 adjacent the split portion of thecasing l, the other plate 4 being provided with a pivoted lever or catch 8, adapted to be passed through the loop 7 and when pressed downwardly to effectively hold the casing 1 closed and rigidly attached to the axle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- In a. dust-guard for vehicles, the combination of a split casing made of flexible material and open at one end, semicircular end pieces of resilient material closing the other end of the casing and having their straight edges notched or recessed to receive an axle, end plates of substantially the same form as the end pieces, flanges projected from the end plates and overlapping the adjacent end of Intestimen'ywhereof we afiixoursignatures the casing, fastemngs securlng the flanges to 1n presence of two wltnesses.
the casing, and other fastenings securing the v end pieces to the Plates, a loop carried by the gg gg g ERMOM" 5 flange of one of the end plates, and a pivoted catch carried by the other end plate and \Vitnesses:
adapted to be passed through the loop afore- J. F. v\VHITTnuoma,
said to secure the casing in'position. CLARE'XGE CUTCOURT.
