Be it known that I, WILnrAM F. RUNDELnof Genoa, in the county of Cayuga, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Reel for 'Reaping and Mening-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear,l and exact description thereofrwhich will enable those skilled in the a-rt to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specicaticn. v This invention relates to an improvement o n a reel for reaping and mowingLmachines, for which reel, Letters Patent havejustbeen granted to me,'dated December 31, 1867.

, The present invention consists in e. modiiication of'the'elbows by which. the beaters are secured to the arms, whereby s aid beaters may be tightened or firmly secured to the arms in the event of Vbecoming loose by shrinkage. l.In the accompanying sheetof drawingsi Figure 1 is an end view of my'invention.l 4

A represents'the'reellshafn turned down at one end toA form a tenonand shoulder, on which a three-socket head, B, is tted, said sockets designated by being atequal distances apart,and open at their ends and inner sides to receive the arms C of the reel. Y

These arms, as in the original patented device, may beef wood, and they are firmly-secured in the sockets by a. plate, D, which is rml'y screwed up against them by a screw-nut, ax.

Longitudinal .movement of the 4arms C, may, if necessary; be prevented bystuds or pins invthe sockets, as'in the original invention. I

E represents metallic elbows, each composed of two llongitudinal parts, o f right-angular form, and constituting sockets to receive `the outer parts of the arms C, and theinner parts of the beaters F, the latter, like the arms, being of wood. I l

The arms C are secured in vonepart of the elbowshy screw-bolts c, which pass transversely through the arms, and both parts of the `elbows and theheaters F are secured in tho other part of the elbows by similar bolts d, (see more particularly fig. 1.)

The two parts of the elbows are not allowed to come in contact with each other, and hence, in case of the shrinking of 4the wood, the arms and beaters, by screwing up the nuts of the boltsl c el, may he firmly clamped and held.

This is a great improvement over my former invention, in which no provision was made for the tightening of the arms and beaters in case -of shrinkage, which always occurs in a greater or less degree.'

The beaters are'mnde'of taper-form, gradually decreasing in thickness from the armsC towards their outer ends, in ordervto insure lightness. 'I y I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The constructing of the elbows E ol'l two longitudinal parts, with bolts passing transverselythrough'the two parts, and also through the arms and beaters, substantially in the manner` as and forthe purpose herein set forth.
