IMPROVEMENT INMANGBRS FOR summe.

To ALL WHOM IT MAY conocen; l
Be'it known that I, GERIT V. ORTON, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and AState of Oho, have invented certain new and valuable Improvements in Hangers for Shafting; and I do hereby declare the following Ato beh. fulland exact description of the same, reference being 'had to the drawings accompanying and forming a part o'f this specification, in which- I Figure 2 is a front elevation of a post hanger having my improvements aiiixed. i Figure 1 -is a longitudinal vertical section through iig.. 2, inthe line of the shaft.
Similar letters of reference on the diferent figures :indicate corresponding parts.Y
In hangers for shaiting it is important thatrtheboxes or bearings should be so mounted upon their supportingbrackets that the box can be adjusted to the line of the shaft 'when the main bracket is fixed in positiori, or, in other words,.to pivot in all directions, to allow of such adjustment.
It is also necessary that the 4box or bearing should. hnvean independent adjustment, to keep the shaft level without moving the main bracket.
To accomplish these objects in a simple manner is the object of the invention illustrated, and can he equally as well used on either drop, post, or bracket, ,or floor-hangers.
Its nature consists,'first, informing a' spherical extension on 'the lower -half of the box, to kiit'into a. corre. spending socket in"a'suppo'rtirig'stem, and in so constructing the stem, with a threadbn itse'trior, thttt'can be 4revolved for adjusting the shaft in aV vertical line, orlotherwise, as may be desired.
Also, in a through-bolt for retaining the box in its seat,.thereby accomplishing the same'resultl with the half, or less than half, spherical joint, that has been heretofore Aaccomplished with complete spheres or ballandsocket joints. v i
To enable others skilled in the art` to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe it, and the mann-er of constructing the sume, reference being had to the drawings, and letters of reference markedthereon.
'The box-is of ordinary construction, having the dripping-chambers A A,'to retain oil... Upon its lower half is formed the spherical extension a, fitting into a corresponding concavity in the top of the'stem b.
Within the projection-a is cored out achamber, 0,' the bottom of which is curved andswept from the samecentre as the4 exterior ofc. In the bottom of this recess or chamber O is a nut, E, tapped to receive the screwbolt c. This bolt.' passes down through the stem I1, and serves to clamp the boxhrmly into its seat after it has adjusted itself to the lineof the shaft. l
-The hole n, where the bolt c passes through theshell a, is elongated, to allow a motion of the box` in the vertical line of the shaft, but is made to {it-transversely, to prevent any movement across its axis.
To raise or depress the box, the screiwbolt c is loosened, and the stem b is rotated injeither direction by a lever insertedin the hole m, until the proper Aposition has been attained, when the whole is firmly fixed by tightening the bolt c, which also prevents thc stento from turning.
Having thus doscribedrthe nature of uiy invention, what I claim as newfand desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 4 1. The convex projection a, in combination with the bolt c, for retaining the box in its seat, substantially as described. i i
2. The threaded stem I1, when arranged to adjust the box by its own rotation, as herein set forth and described.V i y 3. The screw-bolt c, for retaining thc'box in its seat, in the' manner and for the purposes specified.
4. The combination and arrangement of the convex extension a, revolvingscrew-stem b, and screw-bolt c,
arranged and operated substantially as lset forth and specified. v
' GERRT V. ORTON. .i
