MACHINE FOR MAKING CIGARS AND GIGARETTES.
- the tinhnlt return i0 is those Zttiittt intent nut taking part at tip that TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, Josnrn Mnnsxeo and ALEXANDER Mnnnnoo, of Burlington, in the county of Chittenden, and State of Vermont, have invented a new and improved Machine for Making Cigars and Cigarettes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. I
This invention relates too. new and uscfulmachine for the manufacture of cigars and cigarettes, whereby much valuable time is saved, and a quality or kind of tobacco may be used which by other methods cannot be worked into cigars. A
' And the invention .co'nsists in the construction and arrangement of parts, ashereinafter described.
Figurlrepresents a sideelevation of the machine, showing the parts of which it is composed arranged according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a vertical section of fig. 1, through the line x :v.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A represents framework, which stands upon a platform, B.
O is a table upon the top of the frame.
Upon the table there are stands, D,.rigidly attached, which'havc swinging arms, E, jointed thereto, as seen in the drawing.
The stands D and the arms E each have rollcrs,ff, attached, which rollers are surrounded by an endless H is frame, which slides up and down in grooves in the frame, and which is operated by the foot upon a treadle or foot-piece, I, which is connected with the frame by the rod K is a roll, which revolves" on pivots or hearings in the frame H. i V
L L are belts, which pass from the roller K upward and around the rolls, already mentioned, ff, as seen in the drawing. A i v m is a roll or cylinder, between the stands D, to keep the stands at a proper distance apart, and which serves as a tightener to the belts L L at certain times.
'11. n are elastic bands, made fast to the table C at one end, and to a rod, 0, at the other end.
This rod 0' connects the two arms E E, and the elastic hands it tend to draw the arms from the stands I) constantly, and to keep the endless belt G distended as seen. I
I The rollcrf, which is on the stands D, passes through the stand, and has a crank upon it, as seen at p, at one end. i
The tension of the belts L L'is increased or'diminished by pressure of the foot operating upon the frame H, and by the same action the two rollsff may be brought together, or nearly SO. I
The surfaces of thc two rolls ff are roughened in any suitable manner to prevent-the cigar or cigarette from slipping when'it is beingpasscd through the machine. I I
In this machine, fine tobacco, enclosed in a wrapper of prepared paper or other suitable material, may be made into cigars or cigarettes. i g
The operation is as follows,'viz: The frame II is lowered by means of the depression of the treadle I, and the endless bands L L being thereby tightened,- thehin ged portion E. is drawn toward the part D. The rollers f f being thus brought nearly together, the endless band G becomes depressed between them. In this depression, the wrapper containing filling is laid parallel with the rollersf. By means of-thc treadle the rollersf are now brought as nearly together as possible, and there hold,- while the crank 71. is turned. The motion of the roller to which the crank, is attached, is imparted to the other roller, and also to the belt G, by the combined action of which the cigarette is revolved and shaped. l
To fit the cigar or cigarette for use, the ends are suitably prepared by sizing and, varnishing.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A machine for manufacturing cigars and cigarettes, constructed and operating substantially as shown and described, that is to say, with the roughened rollers ff, the stands D D, and the arms E E, the sliding frame H,
with the roller K, with their belts and connections, when arranged substantially as and for the purposes set forth.-
The above specification of our invention signed by us, this 12th day of March, 1868.
