THOMAS LONG, OF GLENVILLE, OI-IIO.
STOVE -POLISHEH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,437, dated May 9, 1905.
Application filed June 3,1904. Serial No. 210,935.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS LONG, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Glenville, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stove-Polishers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stovc-polishers; and the object thereof is to provide a device of the class described which will be adapted to contain a supply of polishing-powder and from which the powder may be fed to the brush of the device without becoming choked. I accomplish this object by the constructions illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the device partly Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a device similar to that shown in Fig. 1, but showing an additional brush in connection therewith; and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of Fig. 2 on the line a; :11.
Referring to the numerals of reference, 1 is a hollow cylindrical handle which is closed at one end and is provided at the other end with an internally-screw-threaded collar2. A plug 3, having a central opening 4 and an externally-screw-tln'eaded shank 5, is arranged to fit within the collar 2 of the handle 1. The said plug has in connection therewith a brush 6, the bristles of which are secured in an annular channel 7, made in said plug and surrounding the said central opening thereof. A plunger 4 is secured upon the end of the rod 9, the latter ranging centrally in said handle and projecting from the closed end thereof. The said projecting end of the rod has fixed thereon an operating-knob 10. The said plunger extends into the central opening 4: of the plug 3 and is adapted to close the same when in normal position. A spring 11 extends around the rod 9 and is interposed between the plunger 8 and the closed end of the handle 1 and tends to hold said plunger in normal position.
In Fig. 2 is illustrated a form of my invention in which 12 is a cylindrical handle similar to that shown in Fig. 1. The said handle 12 has in connection therewith a plug 13, brush 14, operating-knob 15, and inner construction the same as that shown in Fig. 1. The handle 12 has an integral base 16 alongone side thereof, to which is secured a brush 17 In using this invention the handle 1 is filled with polishing-powder by removing the plug 3 or 13, as the case may be, and said powder is removed from the handle as needed by withdrawing the plunger 8 from the central opening I while the handle is held in a vertical position, with the brush 6 downward. This is done by lifting the knob 10. The pow der is kept loose by the movement of the plunger and the spring .11. and in case the powder becomes eaked within the opening I because of moisture the said. plunger will force the caked particles from said opening into the brush 6, when said plunger is returned to its normal position. The brush containing the powder is then applied to the object to be polished either in a dry state or said brush may be dipped in any suitable fluid which may be used inconnection with the powder as a p0lishing agent.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, a hollow handle; a removable plug in one end of said handle and having a central opening; a brush in connection with said plug; a plunger extending into said opening and being adapted to be moved longitudinally therein; and a rod connected with said plunger and extending through the closed end of said handle.
2. In a device of the class described, a hollow cylindrical handle; a removable plug in one end of said handle, having a brush in connection therewith and having also an opening affording communication from within said handle to said brush; a plunger extending within said opening adapted to close the same and move longitudinally therein; and means to operate said plunger.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS LONG.
