SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 789,062, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed February 20, 1995. Serial No. 246,544.
To a whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARAH W. PRESCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Manchester, in the county of Hillsboro and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Strainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention, which relates to strainers, has for its object the production of an improved device of the character adapted more particularly for straining milk and possessing advantages in point of simplicity of construction and eflectiveness in operation.
The improved device has, among other novel and valuable features, two straining fabrics, one of wire and other of cloth, the wire fabric being carried by a part which is bodily separable from the other part of the structure, whereby said wire fabric is accessible for cleaning purposes, and means are provided which facilitate the insertion and removal of the cloth fabric or secondary straining medium.
A further and important feature of the invention is a means for venting of air the liquid-receptacle to which the strainer is applied, whereby the strained liquid is permitted to flow uninterruptedly into such holder.
The invention in detail is set forth in the following description and illustrated in its preferred form in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a can and a strainer embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view of the strainer. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the complete strainer. Fig. 4 is a top plan view with the strainers removed. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing a modification.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, 1 designates the strainer, and 2 is the liquid-receptacle, which may be of the form shown or of other form or type. The strainer consists of two, preferably metallic, parts, one of which, 3, is of funnel form and the other of which, 4, is insertible in the upper end of part 3 to confine the strainer-cloth 5. The part 3 has a cylindrical portion 6, suitably reinforced at its upper edge, as by bending, a reduced cylindrical portion 7, which enters the neck of the receptacle, and a tapered portion 8, joining the cylindrical portions. The part 4 is of cylindrical form, and fastened to its lower edge is a strainer fabric 9, preferably of woven wire. The part 4 has at its top an annular flange ofangular form in cross-section, providing a recess which receives the upper edge of the part 3. The cloth 5 is clamped between the walls of the part 4 and the portion 6 and between the edge of the latter and the inner surfaces of the flange 10, and this clamping action is supplemented by the weight of the part L. The cloth is easily and quickly applied and removed or renewed. The strainer-carrying part4 is held in place by its clamping action on the cloth, and accidental disconnection is thereby prevented.
The receptacle is vented of air as the liquid enters, the air passing through a tube 11, formed by a U-shaped strip 12, secured to the inner walls of the portions 7 and 8. (See Fig. 2.) The upper deflected end of the tube has its outlet through an opening 13- in the portion 8. Fig. 5 shows an air-vent 13 in the portion 7, formed by vertically fluting the wall of said portion. With the strainer in position the upper end of the vent 13 is above the top of the receptacle, as will be understood.
I claim as my invention A strainer comprising an open-ended outer part provided in its lower portion with a ventpassage having its outlet at the side of said part, an inner part insertible in the upper portion of the outer part and having at its top an annular flange extending outwardly and downwardly providing an annular recess receiving the u pper edge of the outer part, said inner part having a reticulated bottom, and a strainer-cloth clamped between the walls of said parts and in said recess and extending across the inner part below the bottom of the latter.
