PROTECTOR FOR PIN-TIQKETS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,827, dated May 2, 1905.
Application filed December 10, 1904:. Serial No. 236,404.
To a, whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, Louis E. HAOIIERELLE, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, in the city and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Protector for Pin-Tickets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists in a protector fitted for use in connection with pin-tickets, the protector being used for receiving the prongs of the ticket-pin after it has been inserted through the material to which the ticket is to be attached.
The object of this invention is to provide a protector of the above character which is formed from a strip of soft metal so constructed as to provide recesses for the prongs of the pin and also so arranged as to readily guide the prongs into the branches of the protector when the protector is being applied to the pm.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a soft-metal blank before it has been bent to form the protector. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the protector. Fig. 3 is a side view of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan view. Fig. 5 is an edge view showing the pin-ticket engaged with the article to which it is to be attached, the protector being shown inserted over the prongs of the pin after they have been passed through the article and before they have been bent into clamping engagement with the said article. Fig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view through the same. Fig. 7 is a back view alter the protector and prongs have been bent into clamping engagement with the article to which the ticket is attached. Fig. 8 is an edge view of the same, and Fig. 9 is a longitudinal section.
The pin-ticket herein represented coinprises the usual ticket 1 and a pin of the twopronged form, having its head 2 locked to the ticket in the usual manner. The prongs 3 4 of the pin are made of malleable metal and are normally projected rearwardly at substantially right angles from the ticket for facilitating their insertion through the article 5 to which the ticket is to be secured.
The protector is made from the strip of soft or malleable metal and when completed is of substantially U-shaped form in edge elevation, the head being denoted by 6 and the branches by 7 and 8. Holes or recesses 9 and 10 extend longitudinally along the i branches 7 and 8 from the head 6 of the protector, which. holes are fitted to receive the prongs 3 and 4 of the pin before the prongs are folded. These holes or recesses 9 and 10 are formed by providing longitudinal chan nels 11 and 1.2 in the face of the blank before the protector is formed, leading from the end of the blank nearly to its middle. The branches are of double thickness, formed by bending the end portions of the blank over into engagement with the inner portions of the same. The mouths of the channels 11 and 12 in the ends of the blank are preferably made flaring, as shown at 13 1.4:, and the ends of the blank are preferably bent outwardly, as shown at 15 16, when the protector is co1npleted, so as to readily receive the points of the prongs and guide them into position within the holes 9 and 10 in the branches of the protector when the protector is applied to the pin. After the protector has been inserted onto the prongs the protector and prongs are folded into proximity to the article to which the ticket is to be attached, the points of the prongs thereby being covered, so as to absolutely prevent their being brought into contact with the person handling the article or into contact with other articles. It will. be furthermore seen. that the prongs of the pin are entirely covered, thus making a very neat and effective arrangement.
The protector made from a strip of soft or malleable metal, as herein described, is extremely cheap to manufacture and yet produces an effectual protection for the points of the pin-prongs.
What 1 claim as my invention is-'- 1. A protector for pin-tickets comprising a head and branches formed from a blank of soft metal, the portions of the blank which form the branches being doubled for receiving the prongs of the ticket-pin therein.
