PATENT OFFICE.
CARL TH. EHNINGER, OF KIRCHHEIM, GERMANY.
PAPER-CUTTING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 788,196, dated April 25, 1905. Application filed April 11, 1903. Serial No. 152,256.
To an whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL THEODOR EHNIN- GER, a subject of the King of IViirtemberg, residing at Kirchheim, Wiirtemberg, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-Cutting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to improvements in paper-cutting devices, and relates more especially to a device for cutting lengths ofi a supply-roll by means of a thin wire; and the object of the invention is to provide a paper-cutting device for the purpose specified of simple and durable construction and without a cutting-tool, such as shears or a knife-blade, which constantly requires resharpening to keep in good Working condition.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective side elevation of a vertical paper-cutter according to my invention. Fig. 2 represents the upper and lower part of the apparatus, partly in section; and Fig. 3 is a plan view.
The bottom plate a and the cross-beam 6 are rigidly connected by means of the pillars 0 (Z. The axle a, with foot-plate la, is rotatably journaled in the plate a by means of the pointed screw-spindle f and in the cross-beam b by means of the pointed hand-screw g. The aXle c carries the paper-supply roll, which rests upon the foot-plate it, as shown in Fig. 1. At the upper part of the axle is provided a ratchet-wheel 2', which is engaged by the spring-pawl Z2, secured in the cross-beam. This spring-pawl serves to prevent backward rotation of the supply-roll and at the same time acts as a brake. A knob u is secured on the pawl for the purpose of temporarily lifting the pawl out, of engagement with the ratchetwheel. To the cross-beam is attached an arm Z, which journals the upper end of the guideroller m, the lower end of which is journaled in the bottom plate a. The cutting-tool consists of a thin steel wire 0, secured with its lower end in the bottom plate and having a handle (1 at its upper end. When not in use, this handle rests upon the cross-beam, the wire passing through a slot 19 therein. In front of the wire in its position of rest is provided a slot or in the pillar (Z, and parallel to this slot isarranged a guide-wire, a string, or a strip of wood or other suitable material 1*.
In operation the paper is unrolled, passing over the roller at, between the guide member 1 and the pillar (Z, in front of the slot- 12 and is easily cut by the wire 0 being pulled through the slot at, as shown in Fig. 1. For measuring off definite lengths of paper a measuringrod a may be provided. If only a definite distance is to be cut into the paper, an adjustable stop may be provided in the pillar d. The lower end of this wire 0 may be yieldingly secured, as shown in Fig. 2, or its upper end within the handle in a similar manner.
It-is obvious that the device may be constructed with the paper-roll and the other parts horizontally instead of vertically, as shown.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi l. A paper-cutting device, comprising a frame, a supply-roll rotatably journaled in said frame, a cutting-wire secured with its one end to said frame and adapted to be pulled with its free end through a slot in said frame, and means for suitably guiding the paper in front of and past the said slot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A paper-cutting device, comprising a frame, a supply-roll rotatably journaled in said frame, means for ordinarily preventing backward rotation of said supply-roll and for braking its forward rotation, a cutting-wire secured with one end in said frame, a handle at the other end of said wire, the Wire adapted to be pulled through a slot in said frame, means for suitably guiding the paper off the supply-roll close to and past the said slot in the frame, means for retaining the freehan-' dled end of said wire in its inoperative position, and means for measuring off definite lengths and widths of paper, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
C. TH. EHNINGER.
