To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AARON Biinxowm, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough o the Bronx, in the county of Bronx and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hand-Operated Gummed-Bindi Sealer, of which the following is a ful?, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices for applying a gummed sealinglabel or strip to boxes, cartons, or other packages, and has particular reference 'to means for applying sulclh labels or strips practically automatica y.
Among the more particularobjects of the invention .is to provides. hand peratod device carrying a roll of gnmmed nding and means for moistening the strip of binding as it is unrolled from the roll and applied tothe box or package, the unrolling, moistening and acting of the binding bein accomplished y the simple movement o the device along the box or package.
Another object ai the invention is to provide a hand operated device for applying a strip of gummed binding, the same being provided with means to automatically sever the applied portion of the strip from the roll when the end of the box or package is reached, oi' elsewhere.
A still further object is to provide a de'- vice for applying a strip of'gumined bind.- ing, and at the same time print upon the facie thereof a legend pertinent to the shipper o the package.
Again, an obJect is to-provide in a hand operated gummed binding sealer special guidin Ameans whereby the bindingniaybe ap either along the corner of a box or alo a joint intermediate of the edges of one side as well asupon any smooth eur-` face.
With the foregoing and other obiects in view the invention consists in the arrangement and combination of` parts hereinafter described and claimed, and while the invention is not restricted to the exact details off construction disclosed or suggested herein, still for the purpose of illustrating aprectical embodiment themo reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters designate the same parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in operative position.

The rame comprises essentially right and left side portions lying in parallel vertical planes, and between' which there are crossbars 12, 13, 14, and 15. A handle 16 is rigidly vconnected to the bars 12 and 13 in position for convenient control or operation of the device. In addition to the crossshow a device of the character bars there is provided at -17 a shoe shown as of hollowor, semi-tubular construction, the lower portion of which constitutes a ueegee or pressing member for the strip o y binding b as it isbeingv applied to the e or box. moistener roll comprising a chamber 2l for water and having perforations 21 through which the water may ooze in small quantities into and through a fabric pad 22 of any suitable nature for the application of the moisture to the gummed surface of the strip which is guided thereover and held in moderate contact therewith by means of a guide roller 23. From the rear portion of the moistener roll the end of the binding strip is guided down beneath the forward portion of the shoe 17 and is always in convenlent reach for initiating the application thereof 'to a box or package in properly moistened condition. When the end of the stvip is thus secured the movement of the device forward will automatically apply the gummed strip to the box or package, or as much of the strip as desired;

or legend upon the face of the strip b simultaneously with the applying of vsaid strip to the box or package, as for example as plainly indicated in Fig. 8. As shown the marks or legends 26 are arranged along the edges of the strip and so that one series may be read in'one direction and another series in an opposite direction. This feature is especially useful when applying the binding strip along the edge or corner of a box or package. j 4
At the front lower portion of themain frame and held between the crossbars 14 and 15 is a peculiar form-of guiding device 28 of angular formation in cross section and comprising a wide blade 28 and a narrow blade 28b and adapted to be rotated or adjusted around a longitudinal axis determined by the pivots 29. For the application of the gummed-strip to any ordinary smooth surface, the guiding device 28 is adjusted as shown' in Figs. 1 and 2 with the blade 28l horizontal and the When, however, the strip is to be app ied to the corner of the box or package as indicated in Fig. 3, the guide 28 is adjusted so asto brin the blade 28 at one side of the corner wlnle the frame as a whole operates along the other side of the corner. This guide. therefore, constitutes a means to insure that the longitudinal center of the strip will-be appled directly over the corner of the box. In this position of the strip the two series of legends 26 will be visible on fixed frame and the movable yoke.

The means for adjusting and holding the guide in adjusted position comprises a lever 30consisting essentially of a leaf'spring fixed at the front pivot 29 and having a stud 31 adapted to snap into any one of `a series of holes 32', 33, or 34 formed in an arc shaped Vertical plate 35 fixed to the front crossbar 14. This lever is provided with a finger piece 36 for the convenient manipulation thereof. In the sealing of cartons such as are commonly used nowadays for the shipment of merchandise the sealing strip is applied over the longitudinal center of the carton where the two outermost top flaps meet. The blade 28b of the guide 28 consequently serves to hold the apparatus in its movement along the pasted portion includes a knife blade '37,
fixed to' andv carried by a yoke 38 pivoted at 39 upon a pair of upward extensions 40 of Vthe main frame, the axis of the pivot shown as just above the moistening roll 21. The rear portion of the yoke is carried at the rear of the main frame and just above thebottom surface thereof. The knife blade 37 is carried normally within an upward depression 10 of the frame and abutting against a pair of shoulders 41 just back of the crossbar 15. This position of the yoke and blade is determined by the action of a spring 42 of any suitable construction acting between the rlhe blade 37 is so designed as to swing rearward in an arc of a circle whose center is the pivot 39 and ,into slot 17 of the shoe 17 as indicated in Fig. 5, the blade having a' central pointto facilitate this movement into the shoe and through the binding strip. This actuation of the blade for the purpose of cutting off the strip may be effected at any time by the swinging of the yoke around its pivot 39. Usually the strip is to be cut oif just over the end of the box or package so that the machine may be operated byhand tion of the iframe as an axis, thus causing the rear end'of the ward relatively.
A machine or device made in accordance with this invention is relatively simple and cheap in construction, easy to operate, and in the practice of the same in the sealing of boxes or packages the binding strips are applied uniformly and neatly with the least expenditure of time or Waste of material.
I claim: l
1. The combination with a main frame adapted to carry a supply of binding gummecl on one surface, and means to moisten the binding as it is drawn through the frame, of a guiding member carried by the main frame serving to guide the frame along the edge of the box or package to insure the application of the binding wlth its longitudinal center alongthe edge of said corner, and means to automatically ap ly a printed legend along one edge of the indin strip l simultaneously with the application t ereof along the corner of the box or package.
2. In a.device of the character set forth, the combination with a main frame, means vto manipulate it along a boxor package, and
means carried by the frame to apply a gummed binding While in motion, of a longitudinal guiding member L-shaped in cross section thus having two blades, one nar- `rower than the other,` and means to hold the guiding device with either of said blades projecting downward.
3. The combination with a main frame, means to manipulate it along a box or package to be sealed, and means to apply a strip of binding to said box or package, of a longitudinal guiding member L-shaped in cross section pivotally supported 1n the yoke to be swung up# lower portion of the frame with its axis of the device, a finger piece connected to the guide, and an arc shaped holder for the linger piece servin to lock the guiding member in any selecte one of a number of different positions,.substantially as set forth.
4. In a gummed binding sealer for sealling boxes or packages, the combination with relatively to the frame and caused to be moved by contact with said end of the box or package.
5. In a gummed binding sealer, the combination with a main frame, means to manipulate the frame, and means to deliver a moistened gummed strip therefrom to a box or package, of a cutter serving to sever the applied portion of the binding, and a carrier for the cutter operative to actuate the cutter automatically when the main frame is operated over the end of the box 0r package.
6. In a immed sealing binder, the combination with a main frame, means to manipulate the frame, and means to deliver a moistened gummed strip therefrom to a box or package, of a yoke pivoted to the frame,
and a cutter carried by the yoke and serving 4to automatically sever the applied ortion of the binding from the unapplie portion when the yoke is brought into bearing contact with a relatively xed object.
