MINERS LAMP. A PIPLIUATION FILED OCT. 25,7904- INVENTOR jzzdz'naneimcfi WITNESSES ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES Fatented April 18, 1905.
PATENT OFFICE.
MINERS LAMP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 787,678, dated April 18, 1905.
Application filed October 25, 1904:. Serial N0. 229,971.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FERDINAND KooH, a citi zen of the United States, and a resident of est Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Miners Lamp, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in miners lamps, the-object being to provide in connection with a lamp-spout a wick-raiser of 'simple construction and so arranged as to prevent leakage.
I will describe a miners lamp embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a perspective view of a miners lamp embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation thereof, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the wick-raiser.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the body of the lamp, and 2 the wick-spout thereof having at its under side and near the lower end a longitudinal slot 3. This slot 3 is formed in a depressed portion 4, and arranged within the spout 2 is a tube 5, having near its I upper end a longitudinal slot 6 in line with the depression 4:, and the upper end of the tube 5 has teeth 7 which are inclined slightly inward to engage with the wick material and prevent its downward movement. Mounted to slide between the inner tube 5 and the spoutthat is, within the depression 4is a wick-raising bar 8, having a finger-piece9 extended outward through the slot 3. Arranged against the inner side of the tube 5 is a plate 10, which is connected to the bar 8 by means of a pin 1l,extended through the slot 6. This plate 10 is transversely concaved and has sufficient spring to engage slightly into the wick material, but permitting a downward movement of the plate relatively to the wick, and
the upper end of the plate is curved inward, as indicated at 12, to engage with the wick during the upward movement.
In the operation when it is necessary to project a wick the wick-raiser is to be moved downward, and then upon an upward movement the inwardly-turned portion 12 of the plate 10 will engage in the wick and cause its upward movement with the plate. During the downward movement of the plate the teeth 7 will prevent a downward movement of the wick.
' Having thus described my invention, Iclaim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a miners lamp, a wick-spout havinga longitudinal slot, an inner fixed tube having aslotand provided with inwardly-turned teeth, a bar mounted to slide between the spout and tube and having a finger-piece extended outward through the first-named slot, a wick-engaging plate slidable within the inner tube, and a part extended through the second-named slot and connecting said plate and bar.
2. In aminers lamp, a wick-spout having a longitudinal slot near the lower end, an inner fixed tube having a slot near the upper end, the said tube having inwardly-turned teeth at its upper end, a bar mounted to slide between the tube and spout and having a finger-piece extended through the first-named slot, a transversely-concaved plate arranged within the tube and having its upper end curved inward, and a pin extended from said plate through the second-named slot and connecting with said bar.
3. A miners lamp having a wick-spout provided with a longitudinal depression having an outwardly-opening slot, a tube fixedly arranged within the spout and having a slot in line with said depression, the said tube having inwardly-turned teeth at its upper end, a bar movable in said depression and having a finger-piece extended through the first-named slot, a wick-engaging device arranged within the tube, and a pin extended through the second-named slot and connecting said plate with the bar.
4. In a minerslamp, awick-spout having'a longitudinal slot near the lower end, a tube fixedly arranged in said spout and having a spout in its upper end, the said tube havingin- In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
