IMPnoVED BED-CLOTHES HOLDER.

'.ro ALL WHoM IT MAY,` ooNoERN:
Be it known that I, JOHN B. MUNsoN, of Bailey Hollow, in the county of Luzerne, and State-of Pennsylvania, have invented a. new and improved Bed-Clothes Holder;- and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilledin the art-to make and luse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forminggpart of this specification.
Figure lis a top view of a bed to which myimproved device has been attached.
'Figure 2 is a side vi'ew of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to furnish an improv'eddevice for securing the bed-clothes in place upon the bed, so as to prevent them from being thrown out of place'by the restlessness of the sleeper; and it consists in the construction and combination of the4 various parts of the device, as hereinafter more fully described.
l'are the posts, -B are the side rails, and C are the head and `foot-boards of thc bedstead. D are twoarms connected to eachother by a. cross-bar, d. The arms D are curved, as shown in the drawings, and their outer ends have straight hooks formed upon-them, by means of which they'arcfhinged tolears, E, attached to the side rails, B, ,of the bedstead.V 'lo thcvinnei- .ends ofthe arms D are securely attached long bars F, which, when the arms D are turned down towards the bed, liealong the inner sides of the side rails B, securely clamping the bed-clothes in place. The ears E upon one or both sides of the bed'stead should be so formed, that: by turning the arms D back, the said arms may be readily detached for convenience in making up the bed.
G isa hook, hooking into a hole in the cross-bar d ofthe arms D, and to which is attached one end of the ColdH, which passes around a guidepulley, I, attached to the lower part 'ofY the side-rails B, Vald around a guide-pulley, J, attached to the lower edge of the head-board C., or to the posts Aat or near the said lower edge ofthe said head-board, and its other end is secured to the outwardly-projectingend of the'short shaft K, which passes through the upper part of the head-board C, and to the inner end of which is attached a small cranl:,.]l i, v by means of which the said shaft K is operated to wind up the cord H, and draw the arms D and bars F down upon the bedclothes to secure them in place, the said cranks being so placed that they may be conveniently operated by a. person llying in"the bed to clamp the clothes abouthimself.
The shaft K is held in place in any position to which it may be revolved by a pawl, M, pivoted to tgheheadboard, and taking hold of vthe teethof a small ratchet-wheel, N, attached to said shaft, as shown in the drawings. By'this device the bed-clothes are held securely'in place, and, atthe saine time, by said bed-clothes being held securely at the sides of the bed, the sleeper will-be comfortable with a. much lighter supply ofbelhclothes than he could be were they not thus held at the sidesot` the bed.
Another advantage ofthi's device is, thatthe bed-clothes, being securedin place after the person or persons arc in bied, will be suciently loose topermit them to turn comfortably when they wish to.
I Claim as new, andV desire to secure by Letters Patent- .i i 4 In combination with the cross-bar F, secured to arms d, which 'are hingedl to staples E, xed in the rail B, the cordH, pulley J, drum K, crank L, ratchet-wheel N, and pawl M, al1 arranged to operate as and for the purpose herein set forth. y
