Description
HENRY HENLEY, OF NEWGAR'DEN, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 78,738, dated June 9, 1868.
IMPROVEMENT IN PRESSES.

'ro ALL wHoM 1T MAY GO'NCERN:
Be it known that I, HENRY I-IENLY, of New Garden, in the county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Presses; and I do hereby declare that theifollowing. is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification. My invention relates to anadjustable -screw-beam for various kinds of presses, more particularly cider and wine-presses, whereby the screw is adjusted by lowering or swinging the screw-beam outot the way during the preparatory process, instead of adjusting the screw by turningr the latter on its threadsLas necessitated with ordinary presses. Thus one-halt the length of screw ordinarily required may-be dispensed with, and the operation of the press greatly facilitated. v A
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction.
Theuprigh'ts Zand d are hinged on bolts at I I.
e and c are arched rods, permanently secured to the` bed of thevpress, and by means of angles at their centres, adapted to the angular surface of the uprights, serve to maintain the latter in a vertical position.
The beam b, in which screw c is held, is connected to upright, d', by means of a piece, n y, the lower section of which is rectangular, and fitting into a rectangular mortiseor recess irrthe top of upright, d', where it is secured by a bolt or pin, on which it hinges. I I
The end of beam b that connects with' the piece n y is provided with a suitable aperture to receive the round portion of saidpece, where it is held by means of a pin. A swivel is thus formed, allowing the beam to be swung around, as seen at a1. i
The hinging of piece 'n allows the beam to he thrown back, as shown at u, and by pressingr the exible rods e and e inward, thus releasing the uprights, the latter, with the beam, may be lowered to a horizontal position, as seen at t.
The end of beam -that rests oirupright, d, is notched to receive the end of the latter, by which they are more firmly secured together. An adjustable stirrup, r, secured to the upright, passes over the end of beam and secures it on said upright, in a manner allowingr it to he easily adjusted.
The different methods of adjusting herein described are designed to meet the requirements ci' the different kinds of presses referred to.
Having thus fully described my said invention,` what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The beam 6, hinged at n y, and secured in au adjustable manner to upright, d, by means of stirrup r, (or its equivalent,) substantially as set forth, and for the purpose specified.
2. Also the llexible rods e and e, in combination with the uprights d and d and beam 6, substantially as set forth, and for the purpqse specified.
HENRY HENLEY.
