INTERCHANGEABLE MARKER AND PUNCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,348, dated April 11, 1905. Application filed April 29, 1904. Serial No. 205,636.
To who/11 i1- 1114/.1/ (mime/'11.;
Be it known that l, lGennJ. l'l.\NSEN,l1( lti zen ot' the l'nited States, residing at Exira. in the county of Audubon and State of Iowa, have invented a certain new and useful Interchangeable .\[arker and Punch, 01' which the following is a specilication.
The objects of my invention are to provide a combined marker and punch of simple, durable. and inexpensive construction in which there is a number of detachable marking-blades and a number of cutter-plates which can be easily attached to and detached from the jaws of the marker or punch proper. The device is adapted for use in marking the ears oi animals, so as to distinguish one ani mal from the other that is, to make a des ignatingmark on the ears of the animals, so that the owner can easily and readily know his own animals. The object of having those blades made in dill'erent forms and shapes is so that the owners of stock in a certain locality can give their animals a ditlerent mark from that of his neighbor. The markerblade and the cutter-plate can also be detached and a punch be attached to one of the jaws of the punch and a mating cutter, so as to provide the ordinary harness-punch.
My invention consists in certain details in the construction. arrangement, and combination of the various parts of the device whereby the objects contemplated are attained as hereinafter more fully set forth, pointed out in my claims. and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation otthe complete machine with a portion of the upper jaw broken away to show the way in whicn the punch is attached to it. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the aws oi the punch, showing the way in which the marker-blade and the cutter-plate are attached to these jaws. Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the jaws of the device. Figs. 1, 5, 6, and 7 are inverted plan views of different kinds of markerblades designed to show the various shapes that can be used for marking or punching, and Fig. 8 is a top view of the jaw.
Referring cutter-plate detached from the I have used the rel'erence-numerals 10 and 11 to designate the handles oi the punch or marker, having the spring 12 attached to the rear end of the handle 11) and engaging the handle 11. These handles are close to each other and are pivotally attached together by means of the pivot 13. At the forward end of the handle 11 is the upper jaw 14. At the forward end ol the handle 10 is the lower jaw 15, said lower aw having the ordinz'tryrounded cutter-plate 16 thereon that is used in the ordinaryharness-punch. There is an opening extending through the upper jaw 1-1, into which the ordinary llarnesspunch blade 17 can be inserted and at the same time can be easily detached from the upper jaw when it is designed to use one of the other markingblades. I have provided a cutter-plate comprising a substantially U-shaped member 18, with a rope portion 11) connecting the sides of the U-shaped portion. Securely held in position by the top-plate 19 is the cutter-pad 20, against which the marking-blade comes when the aws are in their closed position. Extending through the bottom portion 21 of the U-shaped member 18 is a thumb-screw 22, which is designed to engage the outer surface oi the lower jaw and to hold the cutter-plate firmly in position relative to said jaw when it is screwed against the said lower aw. The marker-plate, which is designed to be attached to the upper jaw 11 when the punch-blade 17 is removed, is composed of the U-shaped member 23, having the bottom portion 2-t connecting the side of it. Formed on the lower portion 21 and depending there'lrom is a blade 25, which. may be made of any desirable size or shape. The marking-blzule is designed to be secured to the upper jaw 11 when the punch-blade 17 is removed byineans oi the thumb-screw 26, which securely holds the marking-blade in position relative to the jaw when it is screwed against the jaw 11. It will be seen that by this arrangement of parts the marking-blade and the cutting-plate can be easily detached from the jaws 14 and at the pleasure of the operator, and any other marking-blade and cutter-plate may be substituted therefor. In practical use the to the accompanying drawings, i advantages of this nntrker-blade cannot be too highly estimated, for the reason that a great many individuals own the ordinary harness-punch and by simply purchasing my attachments-namely, the marking-blade and the cutterplatehe has a marker which can be bought for a very small ,amount and in which a various number of marker-blades can be used, so that with little expense the stock-owner can mark his animals with any desirable mark and of any peculiar shape desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States therefor, is
1. In a device of the class described, two jaws pivoted together, handles forming the rear portions of said jaws, a cutter-plate having a U-shaped member, a cutterpad secured to the top portion of the U-shaped member, means for detachably securing the cutterplate to said lower jaw, and a marking-blade attached to the upper jaw.
2. In a device of the class described, two
jaws pivoted together,- handles forming the rear portions of said jaws, a cutter-plate having a U-shaped member, a cutter-pad secured to the top portion of the U-shaped member, means for detachably securing the cutterplate to said lower jaw, and a marking-blade detachably secured to the upper jaw.
3. In a device of the class described, two jaws pivoted together, handles forming the rear portions of said jaws, a cutter-plate hav ing a U-shaped member, a cutter-pad secured to the top portion of the U-shaped member, means for detachably securing the cutterplate to said lower jaw, a marking-blade comprising a U-shaped member, ablade connected with the U-shaped member of any desirable size and shape, and means for detachably securing the marking-blade to the upper jaw.
