Be it known that I, JOHN J. KooNs, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Saratoga Springs. in the county of Saratoga and State i ot New \ork. have invented new and useful tion to the row beneath them and each bottle Improvements in Cases for Storing Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shipping-cases: and its primary object is to provide a new and useful device of this character in which bottles ma be transported without liability of be coming broken, which will be cheap to manu t'acture, durable, and etticient, and in which bottles may be packed in such a manner that waste of space is reduced to a minimum.
A further object of the invention is to provide a case of the above-stated character with a movable head so constructed and arranged that it ma v be easily and quickly moved to clamp the bottles in their applied position.
The invention consists in the construction, combination, andarrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed, and illnstrated in the accompanying drawings, which disclose the preferred form of my invention, and in whieh Figure l is a top plan view of a case constructed in accordance with my invention, the cover thereof being removed. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view thereof, the cover being in closed position. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3 of Fig. Fig. -;l is a similar view on line i l of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a central longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of the invention wherein the movable head is shown in position to permit the application and removal of the bottles. Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 5, the head in this view being shown in position to clamp the bottles in applied position. Fig. T is a detail perspective view of the head.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals. 1 designates the bottom, 2 and 2" the ends. 3 3 the sides. and a the cover, of a case constructed in accordance with my invention.
For the purpose of convenience in illns-;I trating' and describing the invention I have shown the same in the drawings as adapted to receive six bottles for transportation; but i I wish it to be understood that it maybe constructed to receive any number of bottles. The bottles are adapted to be packed in horizontal rows one above the other, the bottles in each row being arranged in reverse direcbeing arranged in reverse direction to the adjacent bottle, as fully disclosed in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings. This arrangement of the bottles reduces the waste 01 space to a minimum, as is apparent from the disclosure in the drawings.
'lo permit of the above arrangementot'the bottom or lower row of bottles and to secure them in position againstaccidental breakage, I provide the inner face of the end 2 of the case with circular grooves 5, which are adapted to receive the bottom of two bottles, and the inner face of the end 2" with elongated grooves 6, which are arranged diametrically opposite the grooves 5, to receive the upper ends of said bottles. Situated between the grooves 6 in the inner face of the end 2" is a circular groove 7, adapted to receive the bottom of the third or center bottle of the row, and situated between the grooves 5 in the inner face of the end )isan elongated groove 8, adapted to receive the upper end of the said bottle.
It is apparent from the above description, taken in connection with the accompanying d rawin that the arrangement of the grooves permits of the lower row of bottles being packed in the case in a horizontal position and each bottle being arranged in reverse direction to the zuljacent one.
To permit of the upper row of bottles be ing arranged in the manner hereinbet'ore pointed out and to secure them in applied po sition, 1 provide the inner face of the end 2" above the grooves 6 with circular grooves 9, adapted to receive the bottoms of the two end bottles of the upper row, said grooves communicating with the grooves 6 to permit of the end bottles of the lower row being inserted in the grooves 5 and 6. To receive the opposite or upper ends of the bottles, elongated grooves 10 are situated in the inner face of the end 2 diametrically opposite the grooves 9 and above the grooves 5. These grooves 10 grooves 9 and above the grooves 7.
have their upper ends open along the upper edge of the end 2 'to permit the bottles to be readily inserted in the grooves 9 and 10. In the inner face of the end 2 between the grooves 10 and communicating with the groove 8, is a circular groove 11, adapted to receive the bottom of the center bottle of the upper row, and to receive the opposite or upper end thereof I locate an elongated groove 12 in the inner face of the end 2 and between the As the groove 11 communicates with the groove 8 the center bottle of the lower row may be readily inserted in applied position.
The ends of the bottles are adapted to be inserted in the grooves by first placing the bottoms of the bottles in the circular grooves and then placing the upper ends of the bottles in elongated grooves in a manner that is apparent.
The cover A of the case is adapted to be hingedly secured to one of the ends thereof, and it is adapted to be secured in closed position by' any improved fastening means.
In the modified form of my invention I disclose the case provided with a movable head or follower 13, which is adapted to be moved to clamp the bottles between itself and the end 2*. This head or follower is provided with grooves similar to those in the end 2 in the preferred form of the invention, and it is provided with a centrally-located screwthreaded opening 14:, which is adapted to receive the threaded end of a bolt 15, journaled in the end 2. The bolt 15 is provided with an enlarged annular portion 16,'journaled in an opening in the end 2 and held therein by means of plates 17 and 18. The outer end of the bolt 15 is provided with a groove (not shown) which extends transversely thereacross in order that the bolt may be rotated, by means of a screw-driver, to either move the head or follower toward the end 2 to clamp the bottles in applied position or away from said end to permit the bottles to be either placed within or moved from the case.
It is apparent that the bolt 15 not only adjusts the follower to clamp the bottles against movement between the end 2 and the inner 1. A case of the class set forth having the inner face of one of its ends provided near its mentioned end and provided near its upper.
edge with circular grooves opposite the upper elongated grooves of the first-mentioned end and an elongated groove opposite the upper circular groove of the first-mentioned end, substantially as shown and described.

A case of the class set forth, having the inner face of one of its ends provided with grooves, a follower arranged in the case and provided with grooves, and a bolt journaled in the other end of the case and having threaded connection with the follower, whereby the follower may be moved toward and away from the first-mentioned end.
5. A case of the class set forth having the inner face of one of its ends provided with grooves, a follower arranged in the case and provided with grooves, the other end of said case being provided with an opening, a bolt having an enlarged portion journaled in said opening and having threaded connection with the follower, whereby said follower may be moved toward and away from the first-named end, and means for retaining the bolt in applied position.
6. A case of the class set forth having the moved toward and away from said first-mentioned end, the outer end of said bolt being provided with a groove, and plates secured to the lastanentioned end to retain the bolt in applied position.
circular groove having communication with each other, said last-named elongated groove arraiiged in alinement with the first-named circular groove.
A case of the class set forth having the inner face of one of its ends provided with a i an elongated groove opposite said circular groove and a circular groove opposite the firstnamed elongated groove, said last-named circular and elongated grooves communicating with each other.
