. UNITED STATES PATENT OF ICE.
I \VAL'IER S. BAYLESS, OF ABERDEEN, MARYLAND.
JAR.
SPECIFICA'IION forming part of Letters Patent No. 634,742, dated October 1 0, 1899.
Application filed April 19, 1899.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WALTER S. BAYLEss, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Aber deen, in the county of Har'ford and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Jars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact de: scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to jars, and more par ticularly to themanner in which the cover or top is secured in place. 7
The object of the invention is to provide simple and durable means whereby the cover may be easily and quickly secured to and removed from the top of the jar and when in place hermetically seal the jar.
Another object of the invention is to construct the jars so that they may be stacked one upon the other, thus saving agreat deal of space in storage and transportation; and a further object is to strengthen the jar at certain points,
With these objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction. and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of myimproved jar. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the jar with the cover removed therefrom. Figwat is a side elevation of the cover. i
In the drawings, 1 denotes the jar, preferably provided with an arched bottom 2 to add to its strength and at each end with an annular head 3, which in packing the jars prevent the sides of the jars coming together and breaking. The mouth of the jar is provided with an annular shoulder 4, having segmental slots or recesses 5.
6 denotes the cover, which is provided with an annular downwardly-extending collar 7, havinglaterall y-projectin g flanges 8,provided with inclined upper edges and of. a length corresponding to the length of the slots or recesses in the annular shoulder of the jar.
In sealing the jar the cover or cap is placed over the open end of the jar, with its flanges opposite the slots or recesses in the jar. The cover is now forced downward and is given Serial No. 713,599. (No model.)
a quarter-turn, which brings the flanges of the cover under the annular shoulder of the jar, and owing to the inclined upper faces of the flanges of the cover the said cover is drawn tightly downward upon a packing-ring 9, which may be placed upon the upper face of the annular shoulder.
The cover may be provided with any suitable means to enable its removal. As shown in the drawings this means consists of studs 10, which are adapted to be engaged by a wrench in the act of screwing or unscrewing the cover.
It will be noticed that when the cover is in locked position on the jar its upper surface,
as well as the studs, occupies a plane below the annular head at the upper end of the jar, so that one jarmay be readily stacked upon the other.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the device will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
The device is exceedingly simple, may be made at small cost, and is well adapted for the purpose for which it is designed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A jar of the character described provided with an arched bottom and with annular beads at its upper and lower ends and on its external side, said jar having an internal laterally-projecting flange near its upper end, said flange being provided with opposite recesses; in combination with a cover having an annular flange between which and the internal flange of the jar a packing is adapted to be clamped, said cover having near its lower end laterally-proj ecting flanges having inclined faces adapted to engage the under side of the internal flange of the jar, and said cover when in position being below the upper end of the jar, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses. 7
