THREAD CUTTER AND TIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,238, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed October 29,1903. Serial No. 178,979.
Be it known that l. Josuru B. UXDERWOUD, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of liayetteville, in the county of Cumberland and State of North Carolina, have invented a new and Improved Thread Cutter and Tier, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to in'iprovements in hand-mani pulated implements for cutting and tying the ends of strands or threads, and is particularly adapted for tying spool ends, an object being to provide a device of this charaete r by means of which two ends of a broken thread may be uickly tied and evenly out without materially interfering with the op eration of the spool.
I will describe a thread cutter and tier embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the acconmanying drawings. forming a part of this specification,
in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figures 1 and 2 are side elevations of a thread cutter and tier embodying my invention. showing the parts in different positions, and with parts broken away to more clearly show the construction. Fig. 3 is a side View, partly in section, showing a completed knot. Fig. l is an edge view of the implement. Fig. I) is an end view thereof, and Figs. 6 and T illustratecertain movements ofthe implement. The implement comprises two pivotally connected handles 1 2, the handle '1 being provided with a ring I), in which the little linger of the operator's hand is to be placed, and the other handle is designed to be held in the palm of the hand. At the halal-engaging portion the handle is transversely curved or channeled. and outward of the pivotal point 4 the said handle 2 is l, ifurcated, forming two members 5 t3. between which the upper portion of the handle 1 operates. The members I) h terminate in clamping-jaws T S. the said clamping-jaws being extended at an upward or acute angle with relation to the members 5 l3, and they also have a slight lateral curve transverse to the lines of pivotal movement 4: and The jaws are pointed and are spaced sufficiently apart to receive the cutting and clamping jaw S), which corresponds in shape to the jaws T S and is mounted to swing on a pivot 10, passing through the butt-ends of the jaw members T 8. The shank portion of the cutting and clai'nping jaw is provided with a notch 11 for receiving the reduced end of the handle 1. The jaw 9 is moved to open position with relation to the other jaws, as here shown, by means of a spring l2. con nected at one end to the handle 1 and at the other end bearing upon the handle 2. It is obvious, however, that the spring may be otherwise arranged without departing from the spirit of my invention. The cutting and clamping jaw is limited in its closing movement by means of a pin 13 on the handle 2. designed to be engaged by the edge of the handle 1, and the degree of opening movement may be regulated by means of a screw it engaging with the handle 1 and adapted to engage its head with the members 5 6 of the handle 2.
In the operation the two ends of a broken thread are held in parallelism between the lirst and second lingers of the operators left hand and the thumb and third linger of the hand. The jaws of the implement, held in the right hand, are passed over the top of the thread. then turned to the left and slightly downward to pass underneath the thread, after which the implement is to be turned so that the jaws while open extend to the right, as indicated in Fig. (3. and now the ends of the thread toward the lirst and second lingers of the operators hand are placed between the lixed jaws and the cutting and clamping jaw, as shown in Fig. T. Then by moving the handles together the cutting and clamping jaw will pass between the lixed jaws, so that the thread is clamped by one edge and cut by the other edge of the cutting and clamping jaw. The ends are now to be drawn through the loop formed around the jaws, and by pulling on the same the loop will be drawn off the jaws and the knot will be formed, as indicated in Fig. 3.
\(hile l have deserilied one way of holding of the handles, as clearly indicated in Figs. l the ends of the thread in the left hand, it is obvious that it may be differently held, as may best suit the operator.
It will be noted that the butt-ends of the jaws are curved or rounded both at the inner and outer edges, so that there will be no danger of the thread being caught thereon, which might be the case if those portions were made angular.
Having thus describedmy invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An implement for the purpose described, comprising a pair of handles pivotally connected, a pair of jaws on one of said handles, and a jaw pivoted between said pair of jaws and operated by the other handle, all of said jaws being pointed and extended laterally.
2. An implement for the purpose described, comprising pivotally-connected handles,a pair of jaws mounted on one of the handles, and a jaw pivoted between the pair of jaws and operated by the other handle, the several jaws being arranged at an acute outward angle with relation to the handles.
3. An implement for the purpose specified, comprising pivbtally-connected handles, a pair of jaws carried by one of the handles, and a jaw arranged to swing between the pair of jaws and operated by the other of said handles, all of said jaws being pointed, extended at an acute angle with relation to the handles and also having a lateral curve.
4L. An implement for the purpose specified, comprising a handle having two spaced members, pointed jaws integral with said spaced members, and a jaw mounted to swing between the first-named jaws and a handle for the last-named jaw, all of said jaws being curved and extended transversely of the line of pivotal movement of the handles.
5. An implement for the purpose specified, comprising pivotally-connected handles,a pair of jaws carried by one of the handles, a jaw arranged to swing between said pair of jaws and operated by the other handle, all of said jaws being extended outward to one side with relation to the handle, and means for limiting the movements of the swinging jaw.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
