PATENT OFFicE,
(IIARLES PFAU, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIUNOR TO THE IFAU MANU- FAC'IURING COMPANY, OF CINCINNA'ITI, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
WATER-CLOSET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 787,110, dated April 11, 1905.
Application filed July 29, 1904. Serial No. 218,595.
Be it known that I, Ciuntns PFAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in \Vater-Closets, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to means for pivotally connecting the water-closet seat or seat and cover to the bowl and to each other.
The object of my invention to provide means wherel y the seat or seat and cover are adapted to stand open in a substantially vertical position, thereby economizing space and also to relieve the strain upon the rear part of the bowl by distributing the weight on the seat over the entire top of the bowl, thereby rendering it less liable to breakage.
My invention consists in providing a link pivoted at one end to the seat or seat and cover and at its other end to the bowl through a connecting member, in a stud or projecting part on the rear end of the seat adapted to rest upon the bowl to hold the seat and cover elevated when in a vertical position upon the bowl, and in a connecting member which permits of being adjusted to adapt itself to inequalities in the parts.
My invention also consists in the parts and in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction as herein set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure I is a side view of a water-closet bowl, tank, and connecting parts with my invention applied thereto, the cover also being shown by dotted lines in vertical position and resting against the tank. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with both seat and cover elevated to a vertical position. Fig. I) is a plan view of my invention and connecting parts. Fig. I is an enlarged detail vertical section on the line a .1 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of my invention with a part thereof broken away. Fig. 6 is a view, partly in vertical section and partly in side elevation, showing the connecting member secured in place to the bowl and to the pivoted link.
My invention is preferably constructed substantially as shown in the drawings, in which 1 is a pivoted l'lat link or fulcrum-plate, having bearings 2 at one end engaging with pivotpin 3 and having bearings :t at its other end engaging with pivotpin 5. The pivoted fiat link 1 is pivotally connected to the closet-seat 6 through strap Tengaging pivot-pin 3 and to the cover 8 through strap 9 engaging said pivot-pin 3, and it is also pivotally connected to the water-closet bowl 10 through connecting member ll, cap l2, and nut .13. I prefer to pivotally mount the cap l2 upon the pivotpin 5 and pivotally attach the upper end of the connecting member ll to the pivot-pin 5 within the cap. The flange of the cap will rest or bear against the bowl or a rubber washer 14; as the connecting member is secured in position and through the hole 18 by nut 13 engaging the bowl 10 or rubber washer 15. I prefer to construct the cap 12 of such size as to provide for lateral movementthereof upon the pivot-pin 5 between bearings 4c and for similar movement of the head of the connecting member within the cap upon said pivotpin. Any inequalities in the construction of the bowl or other parts to be assembled are thus readily overcome by these adjustments.
I preferably secure a stud 16 to the strap 7 to support the seat and cover in an elevated position upon the bowl when raised and resting against the tank 17.
One advantage of my invention is that it permits of economy of space in allowing the bowl to be set nearer to the wall than otherwise, since the pivoted link permits the seat to rest upon the bowl upon its bottom back edge, thereby throwing the seat, on account of its weight, against the front of the tank.
A desirable feature of my invention consists in so connecting the pivoted link to the closet-seat that the rear end of the seat will rest upon the closet-bowl when the seat is elevated to an upright position, and in this way such upright position is maintained.
From the abovedescription it will be apparent that various changes in the details of construction may be made without departure from the scope and spirit of the inventionas, for instance, the pivoted link may be connected to the seat only and the cover omitted,
01' it may be attached to a cover without any seatand for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to=the precise construction herein set forth; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. In a Water-closet, a bowl, a fulcrum-plate pivotally connected thereto and a seat pivoted to said fulcrum-plate forward from its pivotal connection with said bowl, for the purpose specified.
2. In a water-closet, apivoted link, a pivotpin connected thereto, a closet-seat, a strap connected thereto and to said pivot-pin, a cover, a strap connected to said cover and to said pivot-pin, a closet-bowl, means for pivotally connecting said pivoted link and closetbowl, and a stud on the rear end of the closetseat or strap adapted when the seat is raised to rest upon the bowl and elevate the seat and cover.
3. In a water-closet, a bowl, a seat, a fulcrum-plate pivoted to said bowl and also to said seat forward from and above the rear edge of said seat.
4. In a water-closet, a bowl, a fulcrum-plate pivotally connected thereto and a seat and cover pivoted to said fulcrum-plate forward from its pivotal connection with said bowl for the purpose specified.
5. In a water-closet, a pivoted link, a seat and cover pivotally connected thereto, a closetbowl, means for pivotally connecting it to said pivoted link, and a stud upon the rear end of said seat adapted to elevate the seat and cover when in a raised position and to assist in holding them in such position.
6. In a water-closet, a pivoted link, a seat and cover pivotally connected thereto, aclosetbowl having a hole in its upper rear part, a connecting member, a pivot-pin connecting said pivoted link and connecting member, a cap pivoted on said pivot-pin over the upper end of said connecting member and a nut on the lower end of said connecting member to secure it to the bowl through said 'opening therein.
7. In a water-closet, the combination with a bowl, of a fulcrum-plate or bar pivotally connected thereto, a seat pivoted to the free end of said fulcrum-plate above and forward of the rear edge of said seat and also forward of the connection between the fulcrum-plate and the bowl and a cover pivoted concentric rally with said seat, whereby when the seat
