IMPROVED COMPOSITION Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 78,610, dated June 2, 1868.
To aZZ whom, it ntay concern:
Be it known that I, lI/IAX ROSENTHAL, of
of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new Chemical Process for Preparing Unsized Paper for the Purpose of Instantaneously Transferring Revenue- Stamps or any Printed Impressions Into other Surfaces; and I hereby declare the following to be an exact description thereof.
I use the cheapest kind of unsized paper. I use one pound of fine starch, half ounce of common washing-soap, one ounce of rockcandy dissolved in water, and about twenty drops of glycerine. I then mix the ingredients warm and let the mixture stand until cold. I then apply this mixture to the paper with a brush, coating the paper on one side only, and leave it to dry. After it has thoroughly dried, I then apply on the top of the dried surface another mixture composed of gnm-arabic and rock-candy, one ounce of each, dissolved in a pint of water, and coat the same prepared surface again with a clean brush and let it dry, when the paper is ready for use, and the prepared side of the paper is then ready to be printed upon by the usual mode of printing. After the printing is done, the printed side is instantly transferred upon any smooth surface of any material by .merely moistening the back of the paper with clean I Water, and the paper can be instantly removed by raising it up, and the impression is thus easily, quickly, and permanently transferred upon the surface required to preserve the printed revenue-stamp, postage-stamp, note, or print that cannot afterward be removed without injuring or canceling it, thus completing a beautiful. and permanent stamp or impression that cannot be removed,
My object is to produce a quick, perfect, and permanent stamp upon any material (excepting lithographic stone) of a smooth surface by the chemical compound composed of the above-named ingredients applied to the unsized paper to produce the result required.
I am well aware of numerous processes for transferring prints on stone for lithographing purposes; but they are of a different nature, as the stamp or print printed upon my paper cannot be transferred upon stone, to be afterward printed from, as the soap and glycerine in my compound make the stone greasy and despoil the print. Other modes of transfer are done by varnishes and prepared inks that cannot produce thesame result accomplished by my process.
XVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I The chemical compound composed of the ingredients, mixed in the proportions and quantities and applied to unsized paper, as herein described, and for the purpose set forth.
