PATENT OEEICE.
EXTENSION-TABLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 785,848, dated March 28, 1905.
Application filed March 4, 1904. Serial No. 196.542.
T0 all whom it may concern: .i
Be it known that I, MARGELL ALBERTY, a resident 0f Braddock, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Extension-Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to extension-tables, and has special reference to the class of such tables which are capable to being readily extended without the addition of extra leaves or sections and adapted to be reduced in size without removing such leaves or sections.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, inexpensive, and efiicient form of such extension-table, as well as one which Will be strong and steady when the sections are extended and one in which the parts can be easily and quickly removed for any purpose desired.
To these ends my invention consists, generally stated, in the novel arrangement, construction, and combination of parts, as hereinafter more specifically set forth and described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to construct and use my improved extension-table, 1 will describe the same more fully, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of. my irnproved extension-table in its normal or shortened state or position. Fig. 2 is a like view showing the table extended to the length of two leaves or sections. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the table on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail cross-section showing another form of the guiding connection for the extension-sections. Fig. 5 is a detail longitudinal section of a portion of the table through-one of the rails.
Like symbols of reference herein indicate like figures in each of the figures of the drawings.
As illustrated in said drawings, 1 represents the table, which has the main frame 2 therein and provided with the four fixed legs 3 at the corners thereof for supporting the table 1.
Extending over and between the side portions 2 of the main frame 2 is the cross-piece 4, which is provided with the opening or slot 5 within the same, and such main frame 2 is provided with the bottom portion 6, having the opening 6 therein. Secured to the under side of the main leaf or section 7 is the guide-block 8, which lits with'in and extends through the slot 5 in the cross-piece 4 and has the clamping-board 9 removably secured to the same by screw-bolts 10.
Extendingup from the bottom portion 6 and between the opening 6therein and the side portions 2 of the main frame 2 are the outer and inner guides 11 11', and between tho guides 11 and 11' and between the guides 11 and the side portions 2 are the inner and outer inclined slide- rails 12 and 12, respectively, such slide-rails 12 12 on each side of the opening 6 being inclined in opposite directions to each other. The extension leaves or sections 13 are provided with the downwardly-slanting slide-bars 14 14, which are secured to the under side of said sections 13 and extend from the downwardly-projecting end portion 15 on said sections 13 and inwardly from the inner edges of said sections 13, so as to slide on the slide-rails 12 12, the bars 14 14 on each of said sections 13 sliding within the slide-rails 12 12 on each side of the opening 6 in the bottom portion 6. Secured to each one of the guides 11 11 and extending out over the inclined slide-rails 12 12 are the stops 15 15, the projecting' ends of which are adapted to fit within slanting grooves 16, formed in the sides of the slide-bars 14 14', and on these bars 14 14 and extending down within the grooves 16 are the pins 17 for engaging with said stops 15 15. Extending out from the inner edges of the extension-sections 13 and formed as part of the bars 14 14 are the projections 18, which are adapted to come under the cross-piece 4 and engage with the downwardly -extending lugs 19, formed on said cross-piece, when the sections 13 are in position under themain section 7, and the engaging faces 20 of these projections 18 and lugs 19 are undercut or tapered to form a dovetailed joint, as at 20.
The use and manner of operating my improved extension-table is as follows: When the table 1 is in its normal or shortened form, the extension-sections 13 are under the main section 7 and in the position shown in Fig. 1, with the inner ends of said sections 13 adjacent to the cross-piece 4, and the projections 18 on the bars 14 14' are under the crosspiece 4, so that the engaging faces 20 on the projections 18 and lugs 19 are in contact with each other, while the sections 13 rest upon the side portions 2 of the main frame 2.
When it is desired to draw out the extension-sections 13 beyond the main section 7, all that is necessary is to grasp the handles 21 on the end portion 15 of the sections 13 and in pulling on the same will cause the said sections to be drawn outward. While the sections 13 are being drawn outward the slanting bars 14 14/ thereon will slide along and up the inclined slide-rails 12 12 between the side portions 2 and guides 11 11, so that the said sections 13 will be raised, andwhen the inner ends of said sections 13 have passed beyond the outer ends of the main section 7 the said sections 13 will be stopped from further movement and will be prevented from being drawn entirely out or too far by the pins 17 in the grooves 16 of said bars 14 14 striking against the stops 15 15 on the guides 11 11. When the extension-sections 13 are thus drawn out to the position shown in Fig. 2, the said sections will be supported and held on the same plane and flush with the main section 7 by the ends of the bars 14 14/ engaging with the lugs 19 on the crosspiece 4, while the outer ends of 'the main section 7 will rest upon the projections 18 on the said bars 14 14.
When it is desired to return the extensionsections 13 to a position beneath the main section 7, said main section is raised by lifting the same to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, which allows the guidingblock 8 thereon, carrying' the clamping-board 9, to move up within the slot 5 in the crosspiece 4, so that the sections 13 can be pushed inward to the position shown in Fig. 1 and permitting the bars 14 14 on said sections to travel down along the inclined slide-rails 12 12/ between the side portions 2 and guides 11 11. This enables the projections 18 to come under the cross-piece 4 and against the lugs 19 thereon by their engaging faces 2Ol in forming the dovetailed joint 20, as shown in said Fig. 1.
In case it is desired to remove the central or main section 7 from the table 1 to repair, change the parts, or for any other purpose all that is necessary is to unscrew the bolts 10 from the guide-block 8 and clamping-board 9, when said clamping-board can be removed and the main section 7 lifted off the table 1 by its guide-block 8 passing through the slot 5 in the cross-piece. This main section 7 can be again movably secured in place within the cross-piece 4 by passing the block 8 thereon through said slot 5 and securing the clampingboard 9 to said block 8 by the screw-bolts 10.
1n Fig. 4 there is shownanother form of the guiding connection for the extension-sections 13, which consists in forming a slot 22 in the slanting bars 14, and within this slot travels a roller 23, which is secured to the side portion 2', so that the ends of the slot can act as stops for limiting the movement of the sections 13.
It will be evident that either one of the extension-sections can be drawn outward and returned to place under the main section at any time desired and that other sections can be added to the extensionsections and provided with collapsible legs thereon for supporting the same at their outer ends, so that such sections can be drawn out beyond the extension-sections in case it is desired to have a longer table.
Various other modifications and changes in the design and construction of my improved extension-table may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. An extension-table, comprising a tableframe, a cross-piece on said frame, lugs on said cross-piece having inclined faces thereon, a central or main section movably secured above and to said cross-piece, inclined side rails within said frame, extension-sections adapted to lit under and be extended beyond the main section, and slanting bars on said extensionsections for traveling along said slide-rails in moving said sections and having undercut faces thereon, said bars being adapted to come in contact in their closed positions and engage by their undercut faces with the inclined faces of the said lugs to hold said sections in position.
2. An extension-table, comprising a tableframe, a cross-piece on said frame, a central or main section movably secured above and to said cross-piece, inclined slide-rails within said frame, extension-sections adapted to fit under and be extended beyond the main section, slanting' bars on said extension-sections for traveling along said slide-rails in moving said sections, and means on said bars contiguous to the inner edges of the extension-sections for fitting under said cross-piece and for supporting the ends of said main section.
3. An extension-table, comprising a tableframe, a cross-piece on said frame, a central or main section movably secured above and to said cross-piece, inclined slide-rails within said frame, extension-sections adapted to [it under and be extended beyond the main section, slanting bars on said extension-sections for traveling along said slide-rails in moving said sections, and projections on said bars con- IOO rails in moving said sections, and projections on said bars contiguous to the lnnervedges oi the extension-sections having inclined faces I5 thereon for fitting under said cross-piece and against the inclined faces on said lugs and for supporting the ends of said main section.
In testimony whereof I, the said MARCELL ALBERTY, have hereunto set my hand.
MARCELL ALBERTY. Witnesses:
