PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES C. SPENGLER, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
FILING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,812, dated March 14, 1905,
Application filed October 12, 1904. Serial No. 228,242.
To (all wit/2711, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. SPENGLER, acitizen of theUnited States, residing at Rockford, in the county of Winnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Filing Devices, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to document and card files, and refers particularly to an improved means for locking the followers of such files.
The object of the invention is the production of a follower-lock composed of few and simple parts, one in which the locking action is positive and secure, and which may positively be engaged or disengaged at the will of the operator.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a document-file, showing my improved locking device applied to the follower. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section through a file, showing the follower in rear elevation and said looking means. In this view the lock is in its unlocked position. Fig. 3 is a view similar to the last preceding figure, showing the follower locked in position. Fig. i is a perspective View of the bracket upon which the follower is supported.
In the application of my invention to a filing-cabinet I provide the usual file case or drawer 1, having the front 2, the sides 3, the rear end 1, and the bottom 5. The bottom has the usual longitudinal opening 6, with the guide-rod 7 therein. The guide-rod 7 is secured with relation to the filing-case by alined openings 8 in the front and rear ends of the case, within which openings the guide-rod 4. The car 1 1, which also is integral with the plate 10, is doubled, being bent upwardly to form a loop 15 between the two sides of said car 1 1. The car 13 and the two sides of the ear 14 are provided with alined openings 16, through which the guide-rod 7 extends. A locking-lever 17, adaptedto be loosely mounted on the guide-rod 7 within the loop 15 by means of the pivotal opening 18 therein, is provided with a cam 19, formed eccentric with said opening 18, also with an offset thumbledge 20, by means of which latter the lever is grasped to be oscillated. The locking-lever 17 is adapted to lie within the loop 15 with the guide-rod 7 extending through its pivotal opening 18 and with its cam 19 adjacent to the bottom of the loop 15. \Vhen the lever 17 is in the position indicated'in Fig. 2, the cam 19 is free from the bottom of the loop 15, and said lever is loose upon the rod 7; but when the lever is moved into position it is shown to occupy in Fig; 3 the cam 19 impinges upon the bottom of said loop 15 and forces the guide-rod 7 into frictional engagement with the walls of the openings 16. hen the lever is in this position, the frictional engage ment between the cars 13 and 14 and the guiderod 7' is suflicient to prevent the movement of the follower upon the said rod.
In operation the follower is unlocked by moving the locking-lever 17 into position as shown in Fig. 2. WVhen the lever is in this position, the follower may be moved freely upon the guide-rod 7. The follower remains unlocked until the lever 17 is thrown into the position indicated in Fig.3, in which position the cam 19, engaging the closed end portion of the loop 15, causes the guide-rod 7 to contact the walls of the openings 16 with suflicient pressure to prevent movement of the follower with reference to said guide-rod.
My invention is not restricted to the particnlar construction and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, as such construction and arrangement may be changed or modified by those skilled in the art without 9 departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower; and a locking-lever pivotally mounted upon said guide-rod and adapted to hold the guide-rod and the follower in frictional engagen'lent with each other.
2. In a lock for followers, in combination,
a guide-rod; a follower; a cam rotatable upon said guide-rod and adapted to move said follower with relation" to said guide-rod to cause a frictional engagement between said parts; and a lever for moving said cam.
3. In a lock for followers, in combination,
a guide-rod; a follower having two bearingpoints upon said guide-rod; a cam pivotally mounted on said guide-rod between said bearing-points and adapted to cause a frictional engagement between said guide-rod and said bearing-points; and a lever for moving said cam.
4. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower having two bearingpoints upon said guide-rod; a cam pivotally mounted on said guide-rod and adapted to engage a portion of said follower between said bearing-points to cause a frictional engagement between said guide-rod and said bearing-points; and a lever for moving said cam.
5. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower havingtwo perforated cars adapted to receive said guide-rod; a cam pivotally mounted on said guide-rod and adapted to impinge upon said follower to cause a frictional engagement between said guide rod and said ears; and a lever for moving said cam.
6. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower having two perforated ears adapted to receive said guide-rod; a cam pivotally mounted on said guide-rod between said ears and adapted to engage a portion of said follower to cause a frictional engagement between said guide-rod and said cars; and a locking-lever for moving said cam.
7. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower having two perforated ears adapted to receive said guide-rod, one of which cars is doubled to form a loop; and a locking-lever pivotally mounted upon said guide-rod within said loop, said lever having a cam adapted to impinge upon said loop to cause a frictional engagement between said guide-rod and said ears.
8. In a lock for followers, in combination, a follower; two perforated ears fixed to the lower edge of said follower and adapted to receive a guide-rod; a cam rotatable upon said guide-rod for causing a frictional engagement between one of said ears and the guide-rod; and a lever for moving said cam.
9. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower; two perforated ears fixed with relation to and extending downwardly from said follower, one of said ears having an angular .portion; a cam rotatable upon said guide-rod for causing a frictional engagement between the guide-rod and said angular portion; and a lever for moving said cam.
10. In a lock for followers, in combination, a guide-rod; a follower; a plate adapted to be attached to the lower edge of said follower; two perforated ears integral with said plate and extending downwardly therefrom; a cam rotatable upon said guide-rod for causing a frictional engagement between said guide-rod and one of said ears; and a lever for moving said cam.
