SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,156, dated March '7, 1905.
Application filed June 21, 190 1. Serial No. 218,576.
To all 'who'ln, it may concern:
Beit known that 1, CHARLns M. llAnsitn, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in thecounty of St. Joseph'and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful improvements in Dump-l/Vagons, of which the following is a s 'ieciiication.
This invention relates primarily to that class of dumping-wagons in which the bottom boards are hinged to the side-boards and are adapted to be dropped and swung outwardly or away from one another to dump the load and to be returned to their closed position after the load has been dumped.
The object of the invention is to provide a wagon oi the character specified provided with means for regulating and controlling the mechanism which raises and lowers the bottom section.
Other and further objects and advantages will be apparent from the following specil'ication and claims when taken in connection with the annexed drawings, in which I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my dumping-wagon. Fig. 2 is a rear view. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the wagon, showing the bottom sections in their lowered Fig. 4 is a front view Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views of the levers and pawls for operating the Windlass. Fig. '2' is a detail view of the friction-brake mechanism and its operating-lever.

a u." a a" are bolts attached to the front and back boards of the body, the said bolts being provided each with an outwardly and downwardly projecting portion adapted to register with and be passed through openings in the wings. Near the ends of each oi said bolts is an opening for the reception of a key 11.", whereby when the bolts have been passed through the said openings in the wings and the keys placed in the openings in the bolts the said wings will be retained in a raised position. To lower the wings, the keys are removed, when the wings will fall to their lowered position.
B B are the two bottom sections. As will be seen, these bottom sections are each hinged to the side-boards A A at their outer edges by means of the shackle-hi ngcs l). 'ilhese shacklehinges consist of three straps carried on the outside oi each side-board and each bottom section, said straps being arranged in sets on each side-board and bottom section and each strap being connected to the one corresponding to it by meansot a shackle. Bars 1/, each having one of their ends pivoted to the bottom sections, are provided to limit the outward swing oi? the said bottom sections and at the same time cause the bottom sections to raise up against the outer sides of the said side-boards.
C designates a wind lass located immed i ately in the rear oi the drivers or operatoi"s seat. The ends of the Windlass extend through and have bearings in the side'lmards A A. At the center 01 the windlass a chain or cable c is wound and has an end hanging down, from which project two short 'lorked chain or cable sections c, the lower ends of which are each attached to one of the bottom sections on the outside portion adjacent to their meeting edges. On one side of the vehicle-body the projecting end of the windlass has wound thereon a chain or cable 0 side-boards A a short distance from the top thereof, and at the rear end of the said sideboard it passes over and around a sheave or pulley c", thence around the rear board of the body until the center thereof is reached, when it is passed over a sheave or pulley 0*. It then extends downwardly a short distance and is connected to two short forked chain or cable sections 0 which are attached each to one of the bottom sections B B adjacent to their meeting edges. Turnbuchles 0 are provided for adjusting the chains or cables.
D designates a ratchet-wheel fast upon the windlass or drum C, and (Z is a lever provided with a pawl (Z', adapted to engage with and rotate the said ratchet-wheel D, and thereby the windlass C. (Z is 'a lever provided with a pawl (Z adapted to be brought into engagement with the said ratchet-wheel D and prevent it from revolving when the pawl (Z of the lever D is disengaged. Mounted fast on said windlass C adjacent to said ratchetwheel D is a drum E, provided with an outer grooved frictional surface a. A strap or band a surrounds this friction-surface and has one end attached to a foot-lever 0 A notched loop cf is provided for retaining the foot-lever in the desired position.
The operation of my dumping-wagon is as follows: To dump the load, the operator places his foot upon the foot-lever, then releases the two levers (Z (Z from the ratchet-wheel D. If a quick dump is desired, the foot-lever is raised, releasing the strap or band from engagement with the surface of the drum E, thereby allowing the bottom sections to drop and swing away from one another and causing the material within the wagon-body to be immediately dropped. Should a slow dump be desired such, for instance, as when it is desired to spread the material-the operator retains a downward pressure on the foot-lever, thereby causing the strap or band to frictionally engage with the surface of the drum E and causing it and the windlass to revolve slowly, whereby the bottom sections will swing downwardly and away from one another gradually. To close the bottom sections, the band-brake is released and the ratchetwheel D, and with it the windlass, is revolved by lever (Z and its pawl (Z, winding up the chains or cables on the windlass, lever (Z2 and its pawl (Z preventing any slippage of the said ratchet-wheel during the intervals when the first-mentioned lever and pawl are disengaged.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that all the connections between the bottom sections and the raising or lowering mechanism is on the outside of the vehicle-body,
This chain or cable 0 extends along the outside of one of the and therefore there is nothing within the body when the said sections are dropped to prevent an absolutely clean and thorough dump, and, further, by means of the improved shacklehinge connections between each bottom section and its adjacent side-board the said bottom sections will when lowered swing outwardly and away from the bottom of the sideboards and by means of the bars Z) will be caused to raise up against the outside of the said side-boards.
I claim as my invention 1. In a d umping-wagon, a bottom composed of hinged sections, means for raising or lowering said bottom sections, and a brake mechanism adapted to regulate the degree of speed with which said bottom sections are raised or lowered.
2. A dumping-wagon provided with outwardly-swinging bottom sections, mechanism for operating said swinging bottom sections, and a brake mechanism adapted to regulate the degree of speed with which said bottom sections are operated.
3. In a dumpingwagon,a body portion composed of side-boards and hinged bottom sections, a windlass, a brake mechanism carried by and adapted to regulate the degree of speed of said windlass, and connections between said windlass and the said bottom sections whereby the bottom sections are raised or lowered, the said connections being located out of the path of the material being dumped.
4. A dumping wagon comprising outwardly-swinging bottom sections, mechanism for raising and lowering said bottom sections, and a friction-brake mechanism adapted to regulate the degree of speed with which the said bottom sections are operated.
5. In a dumping-wagon, a bottom section consisting of two oppositely-hinged sections adapted to swing downwardly and outwardly, means for raising or lowering said sections, a brake mechanism adapted to regulate the degree of speed of the said raising or lowering means, and connections between the said bottom sections and the said raising or lowering means, the said connections being located on the outside of the body portion and out of the path of the material being dumped.
6. A dumping wagon comprising sideboards, wings hinged to the upper part thereof, a locking mechanism adapted to retain said wings in their raised position, bottom sections hinged to the lower portion of said side-boards, mechanism for raising or lowering said bottom sections, and a brake mechanism adapted to regulate the degree of speed of said raising or lowering mechanism.
7 A dumping wagon comprising sideboards, wings hinged to the upper part of the said side-boards, bottom sections hinged to the lower portion of said side-boards. a Windlass, means for rotating said windlass, connections between said windlass and said bottom sections, said connections being located out of the path of the material being dumped, and a brake mechanism carried by and adapted to regulate the speed of the Windlass.
8. A dumping wagon comprising sideboards, a Windlass having bearings in said side boards, one end of said Windlass being extended through one of said side-boards, a brake carried by and adapted to regulate the degree of speed of said Windlass, bottom sections hinged to said side-boards, a connection between said Windlass, at about its central portion, and the forward exterior portions of said bottom sections, and a connection between the projecting portion of the said Windlass and the rear of the said bottom sections, the said connection extending along the upper portion of one of the side-boards and around the end thereof and thence downwardly to the rear exterior meeting edges of the said bottom sections.
9. l n a dum ping-wagon, a bottom consisting of outwardly-swinging sections, a Windlass, a brake mechanism carried by and adapted to control the speed of said Windlass, a connection between the forward end of said bottom sections and the Windlass, both of said connections being so located as to be on the exterior of the wagon-body and out of the path of the material being dumped.
10. In a dumping-wagon, a bottom composed of sections hinged to the side-boards, a windl lass, connections between said Windlass and said bottom sections, means for rotating said Windlass, means for holding said Windlass in the desired position, and means for regulating the degree of speed with which the said Windlass is rotated when the rotating means and theholding means are released.
11. In a dumping-wagon, a bottom composed of sections, a Windlass, connections between said Windlass and said bottom sections, a ratchet-wheel fast on said Windlass, a lever and a pawl adapted to engage with said ratchetwheel to revolve the Windlass, another lever and pawl adapted to engage with and hold the ratchet-wheel when the first-mentioned lever is disengaged, a drum fast on said Windlass adjacent to said ratchet-wheel, said drum be ing provided with a friction-snrfaee, a strap or band surrounding said friction-sru'face and having an extended end portion, and a footlever attached to the end portion of the strap whereby said strap or band is caused to bind upon the said friction-surface to regulate the speed of the said Windlass.
