.- DUMP-WAGON.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patgntefl Apr. 9, 1918- Application filed. October 9, 1915. Serial No. 55,030.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. NEWMAN, a citizen of th'e'United States, and resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dump-"Wagons, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a dump wagon of the side discharge variety, which is especially adapted for filling in ditches. The objects of this invention are to provide a simple and efiicient wagon of this character which will be durable in construction, and which may be readily operated by one man to discharge or distribute the load along a ditch.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of my improved wagon; I
Figure 1 is a side view;
Fig. 2 is a plan view;
Fig. 3 is a rear elevation; and
Fig. 4 is a detail of the winding mechanlsm.
As illustrated in these drawings, 5 represents a wagon body which is mounted on wheels in the usual manner. The entire bottom 6 slopes toward one side of the wagon, and anextension or chute 7 is pref erably provided to discharge the material at some distance to one side. A door 8 is hinged at 9 at the top of the body, and forms one side of the box or body. A bar or angle iron 10 is secured to the door, preferably at a point adjacent to the bottom, and the ends of this bar extend somewhat beyond the ends of the door. Cables 11 pass up from the ends of the bar 10, over sheaves 12 and 13, and are provided with counter-weights 1%, which tend to open the door and will hold it open in order to allow the load to freely escape. The pulleys 12 and 13 are mounted on beams 15, arranged at each end of the box 5.
Two cables 16 and 17 are also secured to the ends of the bar 10 at' the rear and front ends of the door respectively. The cable 16 passes around a sheave or pulley 18, which is secured to a convenient portion of the frame at the rear of the wagon, and then passes to a winding drum or cylinder 19. The cable 17 passes around a second sheave or pulley 20, arranged at the front of the body, and then passes to the same drum. This drum is carried on a shaft 21, which extends across between the sides of the concentric with the drum 19, and may be arranged in any usual manner. A hand lever 25, which is connected by means of a rod 26 to the pawl 23, is preferably provided for operating the pawl. A second catch or locking pawl 27 is pivoted at 28 to the frame, and is provided with a spring 29, which tends to throw it into engaging position. A bell-crank foot lever 30 is pivoted at 81 to the frame, and one end thereof is connected with the pawl 27 by means of a link 32, so that when the operator puts his foot on the treadle 33 the locking pawl will be thrown out of engagement.
The operation of my improved wagon will be readily understood from the above description and the accompanying drawings. When the door 8 is to be closed the driver operates the lever 24 to turn the drum 19, to wind up the cables 16 and 17, which hold the door in closed position. When the load is to be dumped the pawls 23 and 27 may both be released, which will permit the entire load to be discharged, or the driver may operate the foot treadle and lever, so as to allow the drum to unwind a small portion of the cables, whereby the opening will be regulated, and the material will be discharged over the chute 7 The counterweights tend to open the door, so that the material will not have to force it open.
Having thus described my invention, which, however, I do not wish to limit to the exact construction shown and described, except as specified in the following claims, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a dump wagon having side discharge, the combination of a body, a door forming one side of the body and hinged at the top, a bar across said door at the lower end thereof, cables connected with said bar, counter-weights at the ends of said cables, guide sheaves for said cables, arranged in regard to the cables so that the weights will tend to open the door, a second pair of cables connected with said bar, a drum with which said cables are connected, guide sheaves for said second pair of cables, a ratchet on said drum, a lever, a pawl on said lever for engagement with said ratchet, a locking pawl,
and a foot treadle for releasing said-locking pawl. a i m 2. A dump Wagon having a body With the bottom pitched toward one side of thbddy, a discharge chute forming an extension of said bd'ttomya 'cl'oorforming the discharge sideof the body, and piyotedgatthe; top of the body, beams extending along the ends @fit e beslyoand @p ei et n wmt ne s de sab alQngseid deeele bl n eetedwi h said bar, weights connected with said cables,
guide sheaves mounted on said beams for guiding saidieablesiso that the Weights will tend to open the door, cables connected with said bar at the front and rear ends of the 15 door respectively, guide sheaves for said cables, a winding drum withdwhich said WILLIAM NEWMAN.
