PATENT OFFICE.
ORDNANOE PROJECTILE FOR GUNNERY PRACTICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 784,087, dated March 7, 1905.
Application filed June 20, 1904. Serial No. 2l3,28Z.
To (11/ [I'll 07711 it may concern:
Be it known that I, EYS'IEYN GABRIEL WANG, a subject of the King of Sweden and Norway, residing at Christiania, Norway, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Ordnance Projectiles for Gunnery Practice; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to lettors of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to ordnance projectiles for gunnery practice, and more especially to a projectile which is particularly fit for use in practicing the manipulations required when inserting a projectile in the breech-chamber of a gun. \Vhen practicing these exercises with a projectile of usual construction, the' difliculty is met with that the copper drivingband sticks or adheres to the chamber, so that it is diflicult to get it out again. It has therefore been usual heretofore to practice these exercises only in connection with the target practice.
The object of my invention is to provide a projectile for gunnery practice the driving band of which is provided with two or more projections or lugs which may easily be withdrawn from their normal position into the body of the projectile when the latter is to be removed from the chamber. These lugs may be secured to or made in one piece with movable parts mounted Within the body of the projectile and capable of being securely held against movement in a radial direction when the projectile is inserted into the chamber and also capable of such radial movement when it is desired to remove the projectile.
In the annexed drawings I have shown one form of carrying out my invention, Figures 1 and 2 showing two axial longitudinal sections through the projectile at right angles to each other, and Fig. 3 being a cross-section about on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
u is the body of the projectile, and b a pin which forms the fulcrum for two arms 0 0, provided at their rear ends with outwardlyprojecting lugs (I, which pass through openings in the rear part 0 of the projectile. The outer face of the said lugs are preferably lined with strongly-compressed brass. The rear ends of the arms 0 are connected by means of two links a, which form a kind of a knucklejoint, a boltf holding the tWo links together. This bolt also holds astrap g, which is thread ed upon a rod Z, secured between the arms 0 by means of a screw-pink. Between the bottom of the strap and a nutp on the end of the rod Z a spiral spring it is held upon the rod. This spring pressing on the strap will tend to hold the links a in the position shown, so that a radial inward pressure on the lugs (Z will not be able to move the arms 0 inwardly. Such movement is, however, easily efiected by means of a suitableiniplement, as a book 07., adapted to engage a strap m, secured to the link-joint by way of the pin f. When, therefore, the projectile is to be withdrawn, such implement is made use of and a light pull loosens the projectile.
I claim 1. In a projectile for gunnery practice the combination with the body of the projectile of movable lugs projecting outside of the projectile in the rear part of the same, means to hold the lugs immovable when pressed upon from the outside and means to withdraw the lugs inwardly.
2. In a projectile for gunnery practice the combination with the body of the projectile of radially-movable lugs projecting through apertures in the, projectile, arms carrying said lugs, pivoted within the projectile in its front part, knuckle-joint links connecting the rear ends of said arms, and a spring to hold the connecting-pin of said links inside of a line between the outer ends of said links.
3. A projectile having a driving-band provided with movable projections, means to normally hold the latter beyond the periphery of the band and means for withdrawing said projections within said periphery.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
EYSTEYN GABRIEL WANG.
Witnesses: JoB BOALER, AUG. OLSEN.
