To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, Sir ARTHUR TREVOR DAWSON, knight, and GEORGE THOMAS BUOKHAM, both subjects of the King of Great Britain, residing at Vickers House,
Broadway, Westminster, in the county of London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relating to Recoil and Run-Out Apparatus'for Guns, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to recoil and run out apparatus. In such apparatus it has been customary to make the body of the recuperator and recoil or brake cylinders in one steel forging, the cylinders and passages being then formed by drilling the forging; this method of manufacture is somewhat tedious and expensive and the chief object of the present invention is to reduce the time and expense involved Without detriment to efficiency.
According to the invention the body of the recuperator and brake cylinders is made in the form of a forging having at or near each end two lateral lugs or flanges, one at each side of the body, to which lugs the air cylinders or reservoirs are attached (by screw threads or otherwise) so that they are external to the forging for the major portion of their length.
In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect we will describe the same more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a front elevation of the cylinders constructed and arranged in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section taken approximately on the line 1, 1 of Fig. 1 and viewed in the direction of the arrow.
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken approximately on the line 2, 2 of Fig. 2, and
Figs. 4 and 5 are respectively a side elevation and a plan of Fig. 1.
A is the aforesaid forging, A A are the lateral lugs situated at the rear end of the said forging and A A are the lateral lugs situated at the front end. B is the recuperator cylinder and C, C are the air cylinders.
In the example shown the rear lugs A, A
I are formed with screw threaded holes or recesses to engage with screw threads on the rear ends of the air cylinders C, C and the forward lugs A A are formed with holes to receive and support the forward ends of the said cylinders. The forward end of each of the last mentioned holes is provided with a screw threaded plug or nut C for keeping the air cylinder C in position.
The recuperator cylinder B is constituted by a liner which is attached by screw threads to the rear lower part of the forging; the forward end of the said liner is situated contiguous to a shoulder or abutment B in the forward part of the forging. The said liner passes through a hole or cavity a in the forging of larger diameter than the external diameter of the liner and the annulus thus formed between the linerand the forging serves to permit the liquid employed when the apparatus is in operation, to pass from the liner B to the air cylinders C, C through a port a in each of the rear lugs and through passages 72, b in the forward part of the liner. The brake cylinder may be constituted by a hole a in the forging itself as shown or it may be made as a separate tube attached to the forging by screw threads or otherwise.
What we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is 1. In recoil and run out apparatus for ordnance, the combination of a forging constituting the body of the recuperator and brake cylinders and having lateral lugs substantially at each end thereof, and air cylinders attached to said lugs so that said cylinders are external to the forging for the major portion of their length.
