Description
H. F. PETER. Means of Ignition for Fire-Arms.
Patented Sept. 8,1874.
ggg/A ATTORNEYS WITN EssEs 7% 072/ '.TNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
HERMAN F. PETER, OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN MEANS OF IGNITION FOR FIRE-ARMS.
Speoication forming part of Letters Patent No. 154,804, dated September 8, 1874; application filed June 20, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN F. PETER, of Lancaster, in the county of Fairfield and State of Ohio, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Guns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specitication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a longitudinal vertical section of my improvement applied to a gun. Figs. 2 and 3 are detail views of the same.
This invention has relation to breech-loading side-arms and pistols; and it consists in a novel way of using a percussion-cap for igniting the charge in the gun, whereby a loose charge, as well as a charge in a cartridge, can be red by a cap placed on an exposed nipple, as will be hereinafter explained.
In the annexed drawing, I have represented myinvention applied to adouble-barrel breechloading shot-gun, but it is equally applicable to single-barrel side-arms and pistols of all descriptions which are adapted for being loaded at the breech.
A designates one of the barrels, which may be riiled, or the bore may be smooth. B designates the recoil-shield, with its tang B, and a forward extension beneath the breech, which is pivoted, at a, to a stock-piece, C, so that when a latch-pin, b, is retracted the barrels will articulate about said pivot and allow the breech to be exposed for inserting or removing a cartridge. E designates a metallic centerre cartridge-shell, which is constructed with a metallic butt, g, into the center of which a nipple-shaped tube, g, is secured, the rear end of the hole of which is reamed out, as shown in Fig. 2. G designates a tubular firing-pin having a tapered end adapted to t snugly into the reamed portion of the tube g. This pin G passes through the recoil-shield B in line with the tube g', and it is constructed with a shoulder, z', against which a spring, s, bears, that retracts the pin G after each blow of a hammer or its equivalent. The rear end ot' the pin G is adapted to receive a percussioncap, upon striking which the re will be communicated to the charge through the tube g. The firing-pin G can easily be removed when necessary by removing the nut j, which is screwed into the recoil-shield', through which nut the pin G freely plays.
What l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The tubular firing-pin G, having endwise spring-play throng-h the shield B, and adapted for use witha nipple-shaped tube, G', of a cartridge-shell, E, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
HERMAN F. PETER.
Witnesses H. C. DRINKLE, CHARLES It. DRINKLE.
