Description

F. DENZLER Breech-Loading Fire-Arm N i. 35,086. Patented Apr 29, 1862 UNITE Srrrrns F. DENZLER, OF NEWV YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT lN TOY BREECH LOADlNG FIRE ARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 835M865, dated April 29, 1862.
To (ZZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIO DENZLER, of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Parlor-Gun; and I hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure I represents a longitudinal section of the gun. Fig. II shows a cross-section of the gun-barrel, and Fig. III shows a plan of the breech-piece.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a movable breech-piece,wl1ieh contains the shot and the percussioircap, said breech being held in its place by a bayonetjoint, and removed away from the gun to re ceive the charge.
To bore a hole not larger than the size of a large shot through a solid gun-barrel is a very diflicult operation, particularly when the barrel is of any length. To obviate this difiiculty, and at the same time to obtain a true and smooth hole, I make the barrel of two pieces, a b, of half-round iron, and plane out of each piece a groove of the required size, so that when both pieces are fitted together these grooves shall form the required hole or bore of the gun-barrel. The two parts a and b, Fig. II, are then fastened together by small pins or dovetail pieces, and a metal tube, a, forced over the same, after which the joints are soldered together with tin or any other soft solder. This barrel is then screwed into the breech B in the usual manner. Into this breech B a circular breech-piece, C, is fitted. On the lower end of this breeclrpiece a circular collar, m, is made, having recesses or notches 1), Fig. III, cut out, for the purpose hereinafter described. A projecting arm or handle, D, is likewise fastened to said breechpiece, for the purpose of turning the same. Near the end a spring-bolt, w, situated in the breech B, is made to fit into this handle D, for the purpose of locking the same, and holding thereby the hole 3 in the upper part of the breech-piece in a line with the bore of the gunbarrel.
In the upper part of the breech-piece O a hole, 3, is made corresponding with the bore of the gun-barrel, and on the opposite side of said hole 3 a recess, 2, is made in the breechpiece, into which the nipple 4 projects, which latter is screwed into the breech-piece, and provided with a hole passing either through the same or passing on one side of said nipple 4, and communicating with hole 3. On the lower side of the breech B a projection, 60, is made, acting against the under side of collar m of the breech-piece O, for the purpose of holding the same up, and in its place. opposite to the nipple 4, a pin or bolt, It, is fitted through the breech B, operated by the hammer H. This bolt h is made to move easily inward or outward, and is kept in its place by a small pin, 0, working in a recess in said bolt h. The action of the hammer H against the bolt h forces the same inward against the percussion-cap on the nipple 4, igniting or exploding the same, when the gases of the exploded powder pass through the nipple-bore and act upon the shot situated in the hole 3, propelling the same through the bore of the barrel.
To charge the gun the breech-piece O is turned one-quarter round, when one of the recesses 19, made in the collar m, comes over the projection 00, and allows the same to pass, when the breech-piece can be pulled out. A shot is then put into the hole 3, and a percussion-cap upon the nipple 4, and the breechpiece put back again in its place and turned round until the spring-boltw locks the handle D, when the gun is ready to be fired again. Before the breech-piece O is taken out, the hammer H must be half-cocked to allow the bolt h to be pulled or pushed outward. to allow the breeclrpiece to be turned around.
I do not claim, generally, a movable breechpiece; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The herein-described movable breech-piece, when said breech-piece is held in its place by a bayonet-j oint, and is removed out of the breech for the purpose of receiving the charge and the percussioircap after each discharge of the gun.
F. DENZLER.
